It’s true that there’s an association for everything; actually, there are multiple associations for almost everything. This makes the association world both fascinating and challenging to cover. My task is to find the stories that will inform and engage our readers—primarily association executives—no matter which industries or professions they represent.

During seven years with this highly regarded publication, I focused on the policies, the politics and the processes of tapping private equity and risk to build public transportation projects. I covered the first long-term leases of toll roads in the United States, HOT lanes and innovative procurements of new rail and transit lines.

• Freelance work includes:
• Covering committee action on hundreds of bills for Congress Daily.
• Writing profiles, case studies and other articles for a variety of print and online publications, ranging from The Washington Post and Cat Fancy to Virginia Super Lawyers.
• Editing a children’s art magazine, working with the publisher, authors and designers to improve accuracy, clarity and narrative flow from cover to cover.
• Retooling the written history of a national association so it had a publishable book to mark its 25th anniversary. Edited and augmented text into a coherent narrative.

• There was no better place for learning how to say more in fewer words, or for presenting stories and information in visually appealing, reader-friendly ways. Along with covering beats and breaking news, I developed a.
• Religion reporter — Provided news coverage on hot-button issues concerning religion and its role in politics, international relations, education and freedom of speech.
• Transportation reporter — Followed safety, security and infrastructure capacity news on highways, transit and aviation. The beat required close coverage of Congress, the federal government and private industry.
• Weather page editor — Responsible for all aspects of putting out the full-page color weather page, including a daily story, graphic, map and forecast.
