About Lor Lee (He, Him, His)
I am living the dreams that my ancestors only dreamed of and the life my courageous parents gave me.I was born in the refugee camp of Ban Vinai before coming to the United States when I was just seven months old. My parents came to the United States without knowing a single word of English. When we arrived in the San Francisco airport, my mom, Chia, was 17 years old and carrying me in her arms soaked in my baby puke, while my dad, Tou, was 19 years old, walked with the plastic bag with the T-number written on it, as he was instructed, at chest level so it was visible to whomever it was that was looking for it. I remember growing up in South Minneapolis in a large corner fourplex house where we fit over twenty people, four generations, in what seemed to me at the time like a castle. When I was older, my dad came to be a leader of our clan and would take me along to meetings. Some of those were to help resolve domestic conflicts, talk to his cousins who were failing in school or gang banging, or even brothers who weren't getting along. I remember him always telling me to, "Always listen to all in the room. Let each person share their perspective but know that not one person has the truth. The truth and the answer lie somewhere between everyone's perspective. Even your own."Those humble beginnings and that particular teaching from my father, have shaped how I approached leading diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging over the last twenty years. I have approached every single organization and situation with a curious mindset to learn and hear the perspectives and voices in the room before making any decisions on direction or strategy. I have kept the courage of my parents and grandparents in my head as I step into this work that is meant to be hard, knowing that at the end of the day if I can make a difference in just one person's life, it was worth the effort. I keep the dreams of my ancestors and parents in my heart as I walk this path every day knowing that I am living out their dreams and living my legacy.
