I have authored 12 books on health, social issues and research methods, including (with N Poole) Gender Unchained: Notes from the Equity Frontier (2017), Canadian Perspectives on Women and Substance Use (2007); Becoming Trauma-Informed (2012); Making It Better: Gender Transformative Health Promotion (with A Pederson) (2014) and Transforming Addiction: Gender, Trauma and Transdisciplinarity (with E Boyle) (2015), and hundreds of journal articles and technical reports.

Senior InvestigatorCentre Of Excellence For Women'S Health Feb 1997 - PresentI lead academic research teams, generate grant proposals, and write books and articles on sex and gender science, women's health, men's health, substance use issues, and sex, gender and equity in research. Recently I engaged with the Ernst Strüngmann Forum on a volume Sex and Gender: Transforming Scientific Practice; reviewed sex and gender-related factors in men's and women's alcohol use for the new CCSA Guidance on Alcohol, conducted a SGBA+ of the development and approval of drugs in Canada, produced a review of evidence on sex, gender and cannabis, led a 3 year project introducing sex and gender into the substance use system in Canada, and led Communicating Equality, a team that created gender transformative messages to prevent violence against women in Canada. I previously led IMPART, a 12 year pan-Canadian research training program on the intersections of gender, addiction, mental health, trauma and violence. I was PI of a team developing gender transformative health promotion; a team studying pain, trauma and opioid use by women. Currently PI of several prescription drug, cannabis and tobacco projects, pain research for women veterans, and a project introducing SGBA+ into Canadian emergency response systems. I was an appointed member of the Interim Governing Council for the CIHR, the Scientific Advisory Committees on Vaping Products, the VECTOR group developing vaping guidance for clinicians, and am currently Chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee on Health Products for Women. I was founding Director of the Centre for Research on Violence Against Women and Children in London ON, and Founding Executive Director of the BC Centre of Excellence for Women's Health in Vancouver BC. I have received numerous awards, including the Doctorate of the University (DU) from the University of Ottawa, Woman of Distinction from the Vancouver YWCA, and the Laura Jamieson Prize from CRIAW.
