Lothar Schäfer was called 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐲 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 of the Fraunhofer Institute for 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐦𝐬 IST and responsible for Research Strategy and Coordination. His focus is on 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐞𝐫 and 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 of surface engineering and coating technologies. He has worked in different research and managing positions for Fraunhofer IST since its foundation in 1990 with a scientific focus on chemical vapor deposition of diamond films. Before he joint Fraunhofer he worked at Philips Research Laboratories in Hamburg. He received his diploma and doctorate in physics from the Philipps University in Marburg. He is a founding member and member of the advisory board of Condias GmbH, a spin-off company of Fraunhofer IST in the field of diamond electrodes for electrochemical applications and diamond coatings for mechanical seals. In 2009 he received the Technology Transfer Prize from the Braunschweig Chamber of Commerce and Industry and in 2010 the Award for Science for Joint Projects in Applied Research of the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft. In July 2023 Lothar Schäfer retired from Fraunhofer. As freelancer he offers consulting in coatings and surface technologies. Since October 2023, he has been a founding member of S Mile Solutions Ltd (Pty) in Stellenbosch, South Africa. S Mile Solutions is a spin-off of the Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST and the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE.
