DestinE is an initiative of the European Commission to develop a highly-accurate digital model of the Earth (a digital twin of the Earth) to model, monitor, and simulate natural phenomena and hazards and the related human activities to assist policy-makers in designing accurate and actionable adaptation strategies and mitigation measures. As part of European Commission’s The Green Deal and the Digital Strategy , DestinE will contribute to achieving the objectives of the twin transition, green and digital. In the Commission’s Data Strategy of 2021, DestinE is highlighted as an initiative that will cover concrete actions in the context of the Green Deal Data Space and in support of the Green Deal objectivesEUMETSAT is entrusted with the end-to-end development, implementation and operation of the DestinE Data Lake and dedicated Data Infrastructure, provision of high value data sets and data tailoring services; technical expertise in design, implementation and operation of state of the art cloud and data federations and has established an according 3rd Party Programme. To effectively manage and offer various data sources, DestinE will use such dedicated Data Lake: a pool of data building on the federation of distributed data sources. The DestinE Data Lake is an open data access system on which the DestinE Digital Twin Engine will build to create comprehensive, highly-accurate digital models of the Earth. It will bring together all data sources needed by DestinE. EUMETSAT will build on their extensive experience with managing large quantities of weather-related data and making them accessible via the cloud to users. It will ensure an efficient delivery and use of pertinent data by the DestinE DT Engine to ensure that its models are of high resolution and reliability.
