Lotte Smets graduated in 2005 at the University of Leiden (The Netherlands). She obtained a MSc degree in Psychology, with specialty in Psychology and Law. She completed her studies by writing a thesis about investigative interviewing, namely “The Investigative Interviewing of Children in Sexual Crimes; A comparative study between The Netherlands and Belgium.” In 2007, she obtained a MSc degree of Clinical Psychology at Ghent University (Belgium). Since 2007 Lotte joined the SVA research unit (Social Analysis of Security Research, Ghent University). There she conducted a PhD study about police investigative interviewing, entitled: “Police and Personality, a quantitative analysis of interview competences and - management”. Therefore she studied the underlying structure of interview competences, the development and coaching of interview competences and the impact of coaching on investigative interviewing quality. Particularly, Lotte developed two new training methods in order to train police interviewers more efficiently.Recently Lotte also developed a two day training course for both police and lawyers. By the end of this year a major amendment will be take place in Belgium, which requires that from January the suspect is entitled to have active assistance of his lawyer during a police interview. This amendment follows the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights (cf. Salduz Case). As this will have some serious implications for the present police investigative interviewing practices, Lotte engaged herself to put this all in the right direction by preparing both police and lawyers by training.
