Reporting to the Assistant Vice-president for the Workers Compensation line of business, I assisted in the production of quarterly profitability studies, analyzing experience for various business segmentations. I prepared and shared these and other workers compensation metrics, trends and insights at quarterly "state of the line" presentations to senior leaders. I represented CNA and participated at workers compensation rating bureau industry committees. I participated in cross functional team reviews of workers compensation price and loss reserve levels and weekly inter-departmental bureau filing activity status/CNA impact status meetings. I assisted with post filing approval system updates, testing, and quality control. Additionally, I assisted with the annual department-wide budgeting and planning process and provided pricing support and filing preparation/submission for small business package policy supplemental/add-on coverages. I also provided underwriter user support (training and workarounds) for a general liability pricing tool.

My scope of responsibility, level of leadership, and variety of roles expanded greatly while at NCCI. I was involved in the areas of actuarial systems, rate filings, law evaluations, research, products & services, and data management/quality. As an Actuarial Systems Analyst I co-managed the development and testing of actuarial ratemaking tools and provided systems support to actuarial users. As a Product Manager, I supervised a team that directly produced (or provided actuarial support for) 10+ informational products and services, both digital and hard copy, and provided actuarial expertise/support on cross functional team online tool development projects. As a Data Quality Manager, I managed a team of 25 analysts to support the timely reporting of quality ratemaking data by member carriers, consistently exceeding our goal of 95% data usability. Our team managed the resolution of 100+ yearly data reporting issues, created/updated automated data analysis and reconciliation systems, and assisted the data collection team with the design of data reporting procedures guidebooks and data collection tools. Additionally, we monitored/updated an indemnity pension case reserve calculation tool to validate reported values (including the calculation of present value factors based on interest rate, mortality rate, and remarriage rate assumptions). I participated on 10+ annual state rate filing projects - first as a team member and then as a team leader. I calculated impacts of proposed/approved law changes on overall system costs in 5+ states and impacts of changes in medical fee schedules in 15+ states. I co-managed the update of our annual Prescription Drug Study research report highlighting annual trends in drug costs, utilization, and mix. I also advised and mentored a team of 5 direct reports.

The start of my actuarial career! Here is where I learned the fundamentals of actuarial science as an insurance application - setting prices, estimating loss liabilities, establishing expense needs. I worked in a field/branch office and was responsible for ratemaking, reserving, and rate filing production for MA and RI for personal automobile, commercial automobile, and homeowners lines of business.
