Profile bio

About Louis Bout

I am a Belgian security and defence professional with significant experience as an expatriate. My multicultural upbringing and international education as a third culture kid has shaped me into a perpetually curious and open-minded person that thrives and feels at home in international environments. Living in Austria, Poland, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Canada has both inspired and compounded my interest and expertise in international affairs. It has also very much driven my ambition to pursue a career in international relations and politics.Since my childhood I have always been interested in military history, international conflicts, and politics. Especially my 13 years in the Middle East have made me exceptionally passionate and intrigued by the security and political intricacies of the region. The combination of my international upbringing, academic interests and passions drove me to: ➡️Complete my M.A in International Relations with a specialisation in Conflict and Security.➡️Write my M.A thesis on what motivates terrorist groups to use suicide bombings at a tactic.➡️Complete an internship at the Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies, the political foundation of the European People’s Party, under the tutelage of the security and defence researcher.➡️Organise, host and moderate events on security and defence topics as an officer of Young Professionals of Foreign Policy (YPFP).Seeking to redisocver my own roots while maintaining my strong interest in international politics drove me to study, and eventually work, in Brussels. After my internship at the Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies I accepted a full-time position in the cabinet of the former minister of Economy and Agriculture, and incumbent Flemish Minister of Health, Hilde Crevits. While working at the cabinet I maintained my interest and connection to my main passion and field of study by being an active member of the Security and Defence team of YPFP. At YPFP I launched the monthly online Security Talks discussion series, where I, as the moderator, brought people together monthly to discuss and explore different security and defence concerns. I have since refined my concept into a quarterly in-person discussion where I both moderate discussions and manage a team of moderators to provide a series of insightful discussions to the curious and expert alike. Since joining YPFP Brussels I hold the record for the most events organised by an officer during his/her engagement with the organisation.

Listed skills include International Relations, History, Counterterrorism, Counterinsurgency, and 14 others.

It is of paramount importance that my reports are sent out quickly and accurately so that all communications teams may conduct the reputation management of our politicians accordingly. Starting at 5:30am, these reports contain an overview of all written press, as well as live media coverage from the morning radio. My hourly radio reports contain all interviews from politicians and therefore serve to demonstrate how CD&V politicians are portrayed in the media, and how politicians of other parties are reacting to our policies. I prepare the minister for important internal party meetings relating to the political implications of government policies and initiatives on the province of West-Flanders. To do so, I seek out and provide the required information for the minister from her advisors to make certain that the minister is adequately prepared to answer all the questions directed to her, as a representative of the government.I manage the reputation of the minister by responding to all questions and critiques (that arrive by e-mail, post, and telephone) from citizens directed to the minister. In the phone calls that I receive from citizens I must be especially diplomatic and able to think on my feet as I explain the policies of the minister. In thise calls I must often resolve conflicts and disagreements with citizens that angrily call the minister. Considering some questions or concerns are complex and cross many policy areas I must conduct my own research and enquiries with the relevant advisors and administrative bodies in order to answer the complex questions of the citizens. Considering the volume of questions received this requires that I am well organized and able to handle many tasks simultaneously to give answers to all questions directed to the minister. Show less
