In this role, I led innovation projects across Cisco business units at the intersection of technology and business strategy, focusing on market research and unmet customer needs. Among such projects: Analysed the impact of COVID-19 on Cisco's enterprise portfolio, identifying market opportunities in software-based home networking and home networking security.Initiated a project on consumer data ownership and two-sided business models, driving innovation.Established a long-term strategy for quantum networking, involving cross-business unit collaboration.Future internet - from various angles: identity management, trustless networking and future internet architectures culmination in a Web3 project, investigating its enterprise potential and strategy development.Championed the creation of internal ventures to enhance Cisco's strategic position.

Reported directly to the Cisco CTAO. This was a global role that involved aligning technology to Cisco’s business strategy and championing that strategy to its customers. To this end:Developed 5G-Cloud and Network-as-a-Service offerings, aligning with Cisco's 5G strategy.Ensured reliability and resiliency of Cisco's cloud network functions.Led the 5G end-to-end systems design, bridging multiple business units.

Reported directly to the General Manager of the Mobility business and led a team of senior engineers. Together we:Devised Cisco's 5G strategy through customer engagement, adapting it based on customer feedback.Advocated the strategy to customers and internal teams, influencing product development.Guided Cisco’s internal counsel and the Government Affairs department on policies relating to both licensed and unlicensed spectrum and network virtualization technologies.Nurtured Cisco vendor and supplier partnerships that contributed wireless technologies.

Reported directly to the Mobility CTO and was responsible for Cisco Mobility strategy in NFV Virtualisation and Orchestration. This involves the coordination of various NFV initiatives across Cisco business units, working closely with Cisco's CTAO, and evangelising Cisco's NFV strategy and portfolio to its customers.

In 2011 Alcatel-Lucent created a new business division (S3G) combining its former software and services businesses. This enabled the creation of a software portfolio leading to innovative solutions and services. As the Chief Architect I was responsible for the technical leadership, technical strategy and technical direction of S3G, its standardisation strategy, the quality of its portfolio and the end-to-end validation of its solutions.

Setting the technical research direction of a research group focused on creating new technologies in the areas of wireless networking and associated protocols. Conveying the output of this research into the wireless business unit and initiatiating a new product (BSR).Obtaining external funding for this research group.

Undertook research on: wireless protocols for Voice over IP, wireless packet data systems, wireless mobility and end-to-end wireless systrems architectures.

Joined the Royal Navy in September 1981 and undertook artificer training until 1984. Qualified for submarines in 1984 and served on nuclear submarines between 1985-1991. Specialised in electrical switching and nuclear propulsion and instrumentation. Qualified as a CPO in 1986. Left the Royal Navy in Sept. 1991.
