As an assistant project manager I was the day to day lead for a commercial redevelopment project with a final construction cost of £60m+. During this time I directly oversaw and managed several project work streams and the associated sub consultants, including project financials, structural engineering, architecture, interior design and sustainability. I remained with this project from its inception to the pre construction stage,being part of the team evaluating contractors tenders as well as interacting and directing them following appointment.

As a student I undertook the study of a number of elements of the built environment, largely concentrated on construction and leasing law, construction science and the skills required to be a surveyor. I also studied modules required for different professions, such as construction manager and quantity surveyor, which gave me a well rounded understanding of the built enviroment.

As a landscaper I also managed multiple smaller projects, having to take command of the design, logistics and implementation of smaller projects. Through this role I also learnt basic carpentry, stonework and groundwork skills, with all learning being conducted onsite with minimal supervision. At points I would lead teams of up to 5 skilled individuals, setting out tasks and goals for projects.

During a two week work experience role I worked within a commercial building surveying team within Bidwells, a large multidisciplinary real estate firm. I sat in on and inputted on multiple commercial construction projects, including site visits. I also helped to produce dilapidation reports to assist in the transferal of leases. This time gave me firsthand experience with the profession of building surveying, as previously all my experience had been 2nd hand or purely academic.

As the only permanent laborer on site I was in charge of the cleaning and organization of all materials. In addition I had to keep all skilled workmen on site well stocked with materials and tools. During my time I received basic carpentry training, taking on lower skilled jobs as skilled contractors saw fit, having to adapt to skilled work very quickly. Additionally I had my first experience with health and safety protocols in the professional construction environment, as well as an understanding of how a residential refurbishment works.
