I am a Special Counsel based in our Wellington Corporate and commercial team, running a specialist privacy law and not-for-profit practice.I advise clients on all their privacy concerns, including compliance with the Privacy Act, dealing with data incidents / privacy breaches (including urgent advice as and when a breach is happening), access and correction requests, notification requirements, and privacy policy and procedure. I advise a wide variety of not-for-profit organisations, from small local societies through to large multi-national charitable entities. I regularly attend AGMs and SGMs to provide immediate advice on governance and process issues. I help not-for-profit organisations with modernisation and restructuring, and my advice often focuses on division of governance and management responsibilities, voting procedures, and complex member rights disputes. A current focus of my practice is on helping incorporated societies work through the implications of the Incorporated Societies Act 2022.I am a Committee Member and Co-Secretary of the Privacy Foundation, convene the Privacy Foundation's Legislation and Regulatory Reform Working Group, am a member of the NZ Law Society's Human Rights & Privacy Committee, and a member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals.I have acted as an advisory committee member for a national not-for-profit organisation, and I have personal experience as a committee member and trustee of various not-for-profit groups - I am currently a trustee of the New Zealand Art Crime Research Trust and of the newly-established Hoops and Life Awhi Trust. I also work with clients on a broad range of commercial legal matters including company law, entity creation and structuring, contracts, governance, commercial transactions (including buying and selling businesses) in addition to not-for-profit and charitable advice, including governance and complex trust matters.
