Profile bio

About D. Louis Collins

I am a professor at McGill University and co-founder of True Positive Medical Devices.I am a professor in the departments of Neurology & Neurosurgery and Biomedical Engineering at Mcgill University and associate member of the Center for Intelligent Machines at McGill and associate member of the McGill Centre for Studies in Aging. My laboratory develops and uses computerized image processing techniques such as non-linear image registration and model-based segmentation to automatically identify structures within the human brain. These techniques are applied to a large data bases of magnetic resonance (MR) data from normal subjects to quantify anatomical variability. In image-guided neurosurgery (IGNS), these techniques provide the surgeon with computerized tools to assist in interpreting anatomical, functional and vascular image data, permitting the effective planning and execution of minimally invasive neurosurgical procedures. Automated atlasing is essential in IGNS for thalamotomy and pallidotomy in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, or temporal-lobe depth electrode implantation in the diagnosis of epilepsy, since tissue targets in these procedures cannot be viewed directly on MR. My group has developed robust and accurate MRI-based biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis in Alzheimer's disease. This has led to the creation of a spin-off company called True Positive Medical Devices. My research has been supported by grants from NSERC, CIHR, FQRNT, CFI, NIH and FRSQSpecialties: medical imaging, image processing, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, pattern recognition, image segmentation, image matching, image registration, computer aided detection, lesion detection, neurological diseases, dementias, Alzheimer's
disease, biomarkers, aides for diagnosis & prognosis, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, brain tumours, image guided surgery, deep brain stimulation, augmented reality in surgery, brain development, morphometry, atlas building

Listed skills include Medical Imaging, Image Processing, Biomedical Engineering, Image Analysis, and 20 others.
