Louise Starr Work Experience Details
  • Homegrown Recovery
    Managing Director
Homegrown Recovery Oct 2020 - Present
    Australia
Supervising 80-160 hour work placements at Homegrown Recovery. Building competency in mental health peer work, recovery orientated support & person led approaches. Crafting stories of navigating mental health services and developing practical skills to complete a Cert IV in Mental Health Peer Work qualification. Each student co-designs their placement, meeting their goals, identify strengths and overcome barriers to employment eg: traditional roles; set working hours. Students will inform new opportunities tailored to address gaps in services and enhance their own recovery while developing a lived experience workforce that embraces diversity and inclusioneg co-designing training, workshops and speaking about the benefits of a lived experience workforce. across many industries. This won't happen when it is limited to low paying mental health roles or providing support 1:1 and not thinking bigger. The expertise of each student will evolve with nurturing and learning what meaningful lives look like to them, by sharing their personal recovery as a person who has accessed services, for themselves and/or with others (kin). In particular, people with a trauma, substance use or past criminal history can offer unique value in their story and healing. This pathway may build their hopes and dreams and engage people in a career trajectory that will also inspire hope for others and reduce discrimination towards people who have worked hard to change. It is a passion of mine to see everyone has an equal opportunity to live the life they choose and not be excluded. It acknowledges human rights and ensures all people can create a career and stop relying on welfare payments if they are able to. Personal growth and giving back are common themes in people who are resilient and stay well. This approach will help break the cycle of needing services to stay become and role models. Every student is my teacher too.
