Costa Rica

• As a resident naturalist on the campus and Ecolodge in San Luis, Costa Rica, we coordinated and delivered the following teaching activities to a range of tourists and students, from school to university level:
• Lectures and workshops on natural history of Costa Rica Cloud Forest and Pre-montane Forest (including Birds, Plants, Mammals, Insects, History)
• Interpretation and guided walks within the reserve (Natural History, Medicinal Plants)
• Sustainability tours (including Farm, Biodigestor, Climate change, Carbon Offset)
• Bird watching
• Spanish translation

I was employed by a group of researchers at the university to conduct a study of literature to determine the use and impact of making data openly available in the area of 'climate change ecology'.

Herschel Island And Kluane Lake Field Station, Yukon, Canada

Part of an expedition to the Canadian Arctic studying changes in vegetation with Isla Myers-Smith (University of Edinburgh) along side research into coastal erosion with a group from Alfred-Wegener Institute, Germany. We also carried out fieldwork in Kluane National Park where we set up a common garden experiment to study the phenotypic limitations on.

Toolik Lake Field Station, Alaska

We studied the dynamics of light and carbon acquisition by vegetation at a site on the North Slope, Alaska. Field work consisted of measuring the composition of Arctic Shrub species and plant traits at range of scales from leaf to canopy, for example productivity (via gas exchange using Licor), reflectance (NDVI), Leaf area index (LAI), leaf mass area (LMA).

In a lab studying epigenetic control of plant development using the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Duties included seed propagation, growing plants, seed harvesting, DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis.

During this period I worked part time including 2 summer seasons measuring plant traits, productivity via gas exchange and related indicators, at a long term climate change experiment on grassland in Buxton, UK.
