About Louise Keely
SUMMARY: My core passion and expertise is helping senior leadership teams at sophisticated, global corporations improve their performance and unlock new growth opportunities by extracting powerful analytical insights from internal and market information. These collaborations leverage state-of-the-art advanced analytics, including AI and machine learning technologies. I use data in novel, smart ways along with these methods to deliver results and value. I have particularly deep experience serving consumer-facing B2C industry sectors, with a track record of elevating executives' awareness of the rapid changes in 21st century consumer demand so that they can formulate the best business strategies and investment decisions. I am a Partner in Bain’s Advanced Analytics group and a member of the firm’s Retail practice, and my career has gone full circle as my first role in management consulting was at Bain. Previously, I was a Principal in the Advanced Analytics and Customer Strategy practice at EY-Parthenon. Earlier in my career, I was an Executive Vice President and Global Retail Practice leader at Nielsen, at the time one of the world’s largest information services companies and a pioneer in “big data” long before that term was popular. While at Nielsen, I concurrently served as a co-founder, board member and President of the Demand Institute, a joint venture with The Conference Board that focused on examining shifts in consumer demand and the implications for global firms’ strategies. As a frequent speaker at conferences and author in major business publications, my perspectives on the evolving global consumer economy have been featured in Bloomberg, CNBC, CNN, The Economist, Financial Times, Forbes, Fortune, Harvard Business Review, New York Times, Time Magazine, Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post. The earlier chapter of my career had a substantial academic focus, including serving as a research fellow at both University of Oxford and Brookings Institution, and as a professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. I hold an MSc (first honours) in Econometrics that I received as a Marshal scholar, and PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and a BSc in International Economics, summa cum laude, from Georgetown University. In my personal life, I am an avid student of research in integrative health, including nutrition and fitness. I apply that knowledge in my own day to day choices and, when the opportunity arises, in my client work.

Partner
I am a results-focused leader in Bain's advanced analytics, retail, and customer practices. I advise client leaders, largely in consumer-facing sectors, on their most challenging strategic priorities related to value creation from data and analytics. These include: overall data and analytics strategy and operating model execution, building and growing data and analytics businesses, strategy and implementation of new analytics capabilities including Generative AI, and applying data and analyitcs to design customer strategy and better address customer demand.
Operating Advisor
I am an investor and advisor to The 98, an early stage venture capital firm dedicated to funding technology businesses led by women. Women-led start-ups receive only 2% of venture capital dollars despite generating higher returns on invested capital and quicker exits. The 98 aims to change the funding ratio by providing exceptional women founders with capital, operating expertise and network resources to build great companies and generate superior returns.
Career Transition
I took a few months off before starting at Bain!
Principal, Ey-Parthenon, Advanced Analytics & Customer Strategy
I worked with senior leaders on challenging and complex strategic questions related to their customer strategy, focusing on issues that required use of data and advanced analytics to address or regarding analytics strategies of the firm. I concurrently led EY-Parthenon’s strategic diagnostic practice and IP development. My client accomplishments included the customer-led transformation of a US retailer to unlock substantial cost savings and opportunities to profitably grow their consumer share of wallet. Substantial analysis of their loyalty data was critical to formulate recommendations. I worked with multiple retail clients to develop their alternative revenue strategies, including data monetization and financial services strategies and operational model development. I guided several clients on their data and analytics strategies and investments to build those capabilities. I co-led global client engagements to design and execute customer functional separations, as part of a divestiture, to ensure a smooth transition for customers.
Founding Member
Evp, Global Retail Practice Leader
I served as executive vice president and global retail practice leader at Nielsen, as part of the senior leadership team of the company’s $3 billion revenues “What Consumers Buy” business segment. My core responsibility was shaping Nielsen’s global retail strategy and solution development to better serve the retail industry, and help Nielsen leverage the insights collected from FMCG retailers in over 100 countries around the world. I collaborated with my colleagues across Nielsen's functions to define and address our most significant opportunities to help clients succeed in the market, including through the development of new advanced analytics and data solutions. I spoke regularly with senior executives across consumer industries regarding retail industry and consumer shifts and the implications for their strategic growth goals.
Senior Vice President
I served concurrently as a Senior Vice President for Nielsen along with my role as President of The Demand Institute. See below for a description of my work with The Demand Institute.
President And Co-Founder, Board Member
A joint venture of Nielsen and The Conference Board, The Demand Institute was a non-profit think tank that focused on illuminating global shifts in consumer demand. I held full P&L responsibility for The Demand Institute, with responsibility for shaping the Institute’s strategy, leadership team, operations, research, and go-to-market initiatives. As President, I counseled CEOs, CMOs, and other top-level executives from client companies to help them capture the value of the Institute’s research findings and identify implications for their top-priority goals. Beyond our clients and members, I was frequently interviewed by the business media and spoke at numerous high-profile conferences as a subject matter expert on consumer demand-driven topics. During my tenure I provided leadership for numerous landmark reports, including “The Shifting Nature of U.S. Housing Demand,” (2012); “A Tale of 2000 Cities: How the Sharp Contrast Between Successful and Struggling Communities is Reshaping America” (2014); “Sold in China” (2015); “No More Tiers” (2015); “A Wealth of Opportunity” (2016); and “The End of Cold, Hard Cash” (2016). One of my key responsibilities was shaping strategic partnerships, including innovative collaborations with The Federal Reserve Bank of New York, The United Nations, The United Nations Foundation, Salesforce, and Accenture. After my departure, Nielsen decided to stop funding the Institute and it transferred the knowledge and intellectual capital to The Conference Board, which maintains that archive for members.
Chief Research Officer
I recruited and led a research team in the development of data-driven, highly analytical research on consumer demand trends and shifts and their implications for consumer-facing sectors’ strategic priorities. For the Institute’s marketing and brand positioning, I created and executed strategies to promote and maintain awareness and understanding of the Institute’s value as a tool for consumer demand analysis and input to business decisions. Based on my work, I was promoted to President of The Demand Institute.
Intellectual Capital Director
I was a leader in this management consulting firm that works with CEOs and top management teams to drive growth, applying consumer demand research to product, service, and marketing innovation (Nielsen acquired The Cambridge Group in 2009). In this position, I managed the full lifecycle of client projects and engagements, spanning a range of Fortune 500 companies, serving as a valued advisor to senior-level executives within these client companies. To ensure successful outcomes, I recruited, hired, and developed a team of specialists who functioned at various levels of seniority within our projects. I oversaw the codification of IP development and led all consultant training.
