Sr. Geophysicist - International

Current

The Woodlands, Texas

After transferring all of my industry email subscriptions to my personal email account. I continue to stay informed on companies and international events on a daily basis.I took advantage of the Ikon Science's "Geo's between jobs" program and completed a very good 3-day RokDoc 1D-2D training course in Houston. While looking for employment, I am trying to find additional training opportunities for professional growth.I will attend the HGS-PESGB Africa Conference in Houston in September and hope to catch up with many of my international industry colleagues there.

Jul 2016 - Present

Sr. Geophysicist - International

Houston, Texas

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold acquired Plains Exploration & Production. The organization moved completely intact... my role from PXP continued uninterrupted.I was the principal interpreter for our Morocco deepwater Mazagan block. I proposed and matured 2 drilling prospects to satisfy FM O&G's initial obligation. Prior to drilling the first well, the Morocco project was reassigned to the development department since my time to devote to new ventures had become severely limited.I was returned to my primary role as a new ventures geophysicist with extensive travel attending data rooms, meetings, and conferences in Houston and internationally. I continued my Morocco project interpretation and operations role peripherally if requested and as time allowed.I worked almost exclusively in my new ventures role assessing all high impact deals that were on our radar globally. For my final major project, I was part of a geoscience team assessing the Mexican Gulf of Mexico shallow and deep water bid rounds. I attended CNH data rooms and performed data package interpretation assessing the prospectivity of the bid blocks. I vetted various vendors 2D and 3D seismic programs. FM O&G contracted for one program and I helped drive the QC and processing of that vendor's 2D seismic acquisition.

May 2013 - Jun 2016

Sr. Geophysicist - International

Plains Exploration & Production Co

Houston, Texas

I came to PXP by way of the Pogo merger and was offered a position as Senior Geophysicist. I continued working on my New Zealand and Vietnam projects as part of the nascent International and New Ventures team. With no IT responsibilities, I easily transitioned into a full time geoscience role.In my new exploration role, I drilled the first well in the Phu Khanh basin of Vietnam (initial oil discovery). In new ventures, I have assessed and looked at deals in most offshore and several onshore basins of the world. I developed the skills to use most geophysical software packages within a data room setting. I am expert at finding the geologic and/or technical deal breakers very rapidly while assigning appropriate risk to the analysis.I have a very good track record in new ventures. About 3/4 of the deals I positively recommended resulted in success while NONE of those I recommended against were successful. The only recommended deal that came to fruition was in deepwater offshore Morocco where PXP farmed in and became operator of a large block. PXP's commitment to international investment had been very limited due to continued lucrative and lower risk investment in the deepwater US Gulf of Mexico.I gained extensive experience in seismic interpretation in multiple tectonic regimes including extensional, compressional, and salt basins. I continued my role in seismic reprocessing projects and planned and implemented a large CSEM survey with EMGS offshore Morocco. I am adept at leading technical discussions and presentations with partners and foreign government agencies.I also contributed my technical expertise to the Gulf of Mexico exploration team on an as needed basis. I participated in peer reviews and have been sought out by younger staff as a technical mentor.I was instrumental in obtaining subscriptions to DrillingInfo International scouting and data services and championed several other technical products and services.

Nov 2007 - May 2013

Division Geoscientist / Geoscience Technician Supervisor

Pogo Producing Company

Houston, Texas

With my extensive UNIX background, Pogo hired me into a dual role: Geoscientist & Technical Computing Specialist.I worked as a geoscientist for the interpreters in all the projects and performed most of the velocity analysis and depth conversions. I had extensive involvement in seismic acquisition and processing / reprocessing as well as inversion and advanced seismic attribute / AVO studies. With a SE Asia focus, I gained experience in seismic interpretation and was a team member on all other opportunity assessments and asset sales in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, New Zealand, Vietnam, and China.I ran the International division's Sun Solaris UNIX network as systems, database (Oracle), and applications (GeoFrame/Charisma) admin. I instituted best practices for security and performed software, database, and hardware upgrades as well as administering all the software and hardware support contracts, disk space planning, and applications licensing.I was later conscripted by corporate IT to leverage my extensive UNIX background to purchase, configure, and deploy Pogo's outward facing Sun Microsystem gateway servers. I set up Pogo's internet domain and I was given the additional roles of postmaster, webmaster, and security admin (Checkpoint FireWall-1). I was also the back-up administrator for our HP-UX based financial system.I also gained extensive experience in internal and external audits via Pogo's Sarbanes-Oxley implementation.

Aug 1997 - Nov 2007

Geoscientist (Various)

Around Texas And The World

I started as a production geologist with field mapping, development, and operations responsibilities. After extensive operations geology training, I sat high profile wells for high pressure/casing seat hunts.I showed an aptitude for computer usage (domain of engineers at the time) and trained in computing, database, and classroom instruction (1983). I became a highly trained computer user support geologist bringing computer based processes and workflows to the Exxon masses (initially in West Texas Production Division - 1985).Seconded to Saudi Aramco in Dhahran (1988), I was team lead of an ad hoc mapping and applications group for regional mapping and integration of subsurface geological, geophysical, and borehole information. As a geoscientist on wellsite geology rotation I sat some exciting paleozoic wells in western Saudi.I transferred to Esso Australia (1991) as a team leader for mainframe to UNIX workstation based applications transition. I worked projects both as a geoscientist and as a trainer developing integrated workflows to meet specific project objectives and became much more geophysically involved. I performed most of the depth conversions at EAL during my tenure and became accomplished in all UNIX aspects including system administration, database, and script programming. Finally, I transferred back to Houston (1996) into a geophysical support group performing support and training of velocity modelling products. I was responsible for developing and delivering workshops to world-wide affiliate offices. My final Exxon role was in geophysical interpretation support.Throughout my Exxon career I made it clear to management I considered myself a geoscientist. I received continuing professional development in the geosciences and attended the majority of internal Exxon geoscience training courses. I also had courses in exploration economics and risk analysis, effective training methods, communications, computing and database, and supervision.
