About Alex Low
I have a good balance in research and developing industry products. I have worked in a variety of engineering areas - from being a hardware/embedded engineer, to being a researcher/signal processing engineer whereby I developed audio algorithms for the mobile phone industry. I currently switched fields focusing in image processing for the video production industry. I have an inquisitive mind fuelled by the thirst for knowledge. I am a firm believer in teamwork, as I believe sharing knowledge is one of the keys to product success. I am also a firm believer in paying attention to details. My experience has given me the opportunity to go through the whole process of product development – from creating the first “proof of concept” all the way down to the final product. This includes research and prototyping; embedded hardware and software designing; testing and verification; finally manufacturing. What I can bring with my experience is:★ Planning and Organization Skill• To minimise assembly errors, I created a design guide for PCB designers to follow thus resulting in a reduction of production cost by 20% when I was working in Bitwise, Shanghai.• Step-by-step documentation of DSP algorithms which include researching methodologies, modeling & simulations, to development & deployment on real-time DSP hardware. ★ Problem Solver and Ability to Deliver•I was a member of the R&D team in Bitwise Shanghai involved in the development of an anti-bacterial air treatment device used by food processing factories, hospitals, veterinary surgeons and laboratories in Europe and Australia. The product has been HACCP certified.• I was a member of an R&D team in Cirrus logic working on a tight deadline for major mobile phones and phone tablet manufacturers. We developed state-of-the-art background noise and wind reduction algorithms for improved voice quality on mobile handsets. ★ Presenting and Publishing Technical Papers in Prestigious Conferences and Journals
Listed skills include Digital Signal Processors, Embedded Systems, Pcb Design, Matlab, and 26 others.

ATOMOS delivers cutting edge products for creative professionals that merge recording, monitoring, playback & editing into a single touchscreen device to enable faster, higher quality and more affordable video production.I was given the task to work on a standalone R&D project in designing ATOMOS up and coming line of products that will enable high dynamic range (HDR) content captured from professional cameras to be properly displayed on an ATOMOS device that has a high brightness display. My work included modelling the HDR framework, which redesigns the opto-electrical transfer function (OETF) mapping of the encoded raw video signal that is outputted from different cameras (i.e. Sony, Canon, Panasonic, Arri). This modified OETF allows the viewer to perceive a higher contrast ratio in a picture when viewed on a high brightness display. The HDR model was then ported to the platform and packaged to the software team for integration to the system. My other responsibilities was to work on the application software (in MVSE) for screen calibration to control the colour saturation, colour temperature and brightness of the screen, so that consistent colours in the colour space is displayed between different devices.
Dsp Engineer
Dsp Engineer
Wolfson Microelectronics is a global leader in the delivery of high performance mixed-signal semiconductors and audio solutions for the consumer electronics market. My main responsibility is to research into efficient state-of-the-art background noise cancellation/suppression, speech enhancement, and wind reduction algorithms so that it can run on a real-time audio DSP for mobile handset and tablet devices. This is done to improve voice quality on a call and improve audio recording quality. My responsibilities also include setting up ETSI acoustic laboratory tests of smartphones for testing/tuning of algorithms in a soundproof room and wind tunnel chamber. In addition, my role includes interacting with field application and software application engineers in setting up tuning guides to assist with customer on-site tuning of the algorithms.
Project Engineer
My main responsibility was to create a video security solution in designing and integrating security alarm panels with IP cameras to clients’ back-to-base central monitoring station.
Project Engineer
I was given the role to work on the ground with PCB assembly line managers to understand production issues due to poor PCB design. This included creating a design guide for hardware engineers to follow and familiarizing them with IPC standards. I was also responsible for the rapid prototyping stage of a portable electronic human vein enhancement device. The prototype was to create an assisting tool for nurses to visually enhance human veins by eye for intravenous access (IV) that uses image-processing techniques on a real-time DSP hardware.
Tutor
My responsibility as a laboratory tutor was to teach students’ basic power supply circuit design, PCB routing of single/double layer boards with the understanding of signal/power integrity and testing/debugging of circuits.
Electronic Engineer
Shanghai Bitwise is a subsidiary of the Bitwise group Thailand. Its business includes design and manufacturing (OEM & ODM) a wide range of air-conditioner/heating products, electronic controllers, air purifiers, medical devices and lighting applications (LEDs & induction lamps) according to customer’s specifications. My responsibility as an embedded hardware engineer was to design the hardware schematics, PCB layout and the software interface of air-conditioning panels, wireless thermostats and anti-bacterial air treatment device.
