About Lowell Berentsen

I am currently retired from Southern Illinois University after 10 years of teaching Airframe & Powerplant courses in the Aviation Technologies degree program. I also taught Helicopter Theory, which was an elective course in fundamental helicopter field maintenance. Prior to teaching at SIU I worked as an airplane and helicopter mechanic for 23 years for various companies operating out of Fairbanks, Alaska. Also, when I was young, I served as a military policeman in the United States Army, 1st Air Cavalry Division, in Vietnam. Many of my civilian work assignments were at remote sites and in arctic conditions. It was very rewarding to bring my skills and experience to the university classroom/laboratory setting where I could share with the next generation of aviators my life lessons as well as those from the text book. R. G. LeTourneau wrote in Mover of Men and Mountains, “I know we septuagenarians are supposed to look back at our youth as our formative years . . . But actually my first 65 years gave me just the background and training I needed to start rolling.” I look forward the work ahead of me, whether it be teaching young mechanics how to do daily field maintenance on light and medium helicopters or teaching a Bible class at a Christian school, the challenges of the future are more exciting and rewarding than ever. In June, 2015, my wife and I arrived back in Alaska, where we have resumed our "retirement" and will continue to use the knowledge and skills we have acquired over the course of our lives. I am now teaching Private Pilot Ground School and Instrument Rating Ground School at Alaska Bible College in Palmer, Alaska.
