A CWO must have been a senior non-commissioned officer (E-7 through E-9) to gain the commission.

In 1998, he attended First Class Dive School and Advanced UCT training. From 1998-2001 he served at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center and then completed Advanced Builder school and Salvage Construction Demolition Diver training. In 2001, he was promoted to Chief Petty Officer and served as the UCT-1 Air Detachment Bravo Officer in Charge. From 2004-2006 he was assigned to the UCT-1 Operations Department as the Contingency and Exercises Officer. He was commissioned to Chief Warrant Officer in June 2006.
