I teach in the School of Business at Saint Martin’s University in Lacey, Washington, and in the Global Executive MBA Program at the University of International Business & Economics in Beijing, China. These roles complement each other by allowing me to understand business and adult learning from very different perspectives. Using marketing, management and leadership curriculum, I teach next-generation skills that help people thrive in a world framed by VUCA - volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity.Visiting China twice yearly also helps me to process as the world transforms. I am fortunate to dive deep into global conversations and site visits that demonstrate the role that effective intercultural leadership and management has on operational success. As businesses increasingly experience the effects of VUCA, they come to rely on professionals who understand and lead from differing perspectives. Business in the East is fundamentally the same as business in the West.Globalization creates challenges that can reduce the quality of life for people and workers everywhere. Every day, businesses are exposed to more risk with less predictability. Focusing on the negative helps us cope. Yet this is short sighted. Instead, we need to focus on strategies that leverage the benefits. Technology gives us tools to improve our quality of life and solve huge problems, if we can collaborate like never before. My research recognizes that authentic leadership offers solutions to help people leverage the benefits of modern life in order to minimize the negative impact of VUCA. My writing focuses on themes of servant and authentic leadership, workplace motivation, global business in a VUCA world, facilitating change, higher education leadership, and the intersections of these topics. I am grateful for education and early business experience that helped me to get to this point. I earned a PhD Leadership Studies from Gonzaga University, an MS in Advertising from Syracuse, and an MBA from Western Governors University. Prior to teaching, I worked in marketing for technology startups and media companies, including Amazon, Microsoft and National Public Radio. At Amazon, I launched the toys and games Marketplace category, which is now a profitable extension of the Amazon brand. In addition, I gained operations and management experience working in one of the company's earliest and largest distribution centers. In the free time I create, I enjoy international travel, downhill skiing and helping people enrich their lives through education, creativity and technology.
