About Lindsay Sidak-Loftis

I work for GAPs solution in a contract position for the NIH/NIAID as a Biologist in the LMVR department. I graduated with my Ph.D. in Biomedical sciences focusing on Immunology and Infectious disease at Washington State University where I transitioned to a Postdoctoral research assistant in the lab of Dr. Dana Shaw. My research focused on understanding tick immunity and how stress responses interact with innate immunity. Previously, I obtained my Bachelor's degree in Biology with an emphasis in infectious disease and molecular biology with a minor in Chemistry at Northern Arizona Univerity. I was an undergraduate researcher at the Pathogen and Microbial Institute at NAU under the direction of Dr. Dave Wagner and Dr. Joe Busch. I have worked on various projects ranging from species identification of Peromysicus mice throughout Northern Arizona to understanding pyrethroid resistance in ticks, to sequencing typing C. diff from canine fecal samples. After Graduation, I worked with the San Diego Zoo Global as a Research Technician for two years before continuing my education.

    Undergraduate Research Assistant
Northern Arizona University Nov 2012 - Jul 2016
Microbial Genetics And Genomics Research Center
I performed research to characterize the genetic diversity of natural populations, including wild Peromyscus mice in Northern Arizona, cottonwood trees (Populus angustifolia), Hawaiian Ohi’a trees (Metrosideros polymorpha) and cattle fever ticks (Rhipicephalus microplus). This work requires meticulous molecular skills, the ability to manage large databases, and a team-based work ethic. I was also involved in a project investigating the influence of plague (Yersinia pestis) on Gunnison’s prairie dogs (Cynomys gunnisoni) during the past century; in this work I am genotyping MHC alleles from historical (pre-1930) and contemporary populations. I have worked on pathogen genetics as well, including Clostridium difficile from canine pets of the Flagstaff community and experimental infections of non-pathogenic Burkholderia species in laboratory mice. In this work I have become familiar with a wide variety of field and laboratory methods as well as analyses for population genetics and phylogenetics. I had the honor serving on the undergraduate leadership team in the MGGen lab, with responsibilities that include training other undergraduates in the use of molecular genetic techniques, monitoring safe work methods in a BSL2 laboratory, and helping to lead lab tours.
