I worked as a general dentist with interest in geriatrics, special needs, and mobile dentistry. I collaborated with a nurse anesthetist to provide IV Sedation dental services to adults with special needs. I also served in a research capacity in collaboration with the Mayo Clinic.

This appointment as Research Collaborator at the Mayo Clinic in the Department of Dental Specialties will allow me to foster research partnerships with the Rochester Epidemiology Project, a large secondary data source of comprehensive health records.

The Iowa City Amateur Radio Club (ICARC) has been in existence since at least 1933, when it was first affiliated with the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the national association for Amateur Radio. The club callsign, WØJV, belonged to a long-time club member, George Carson, who was a Physics Professor at the University of Iowa. The club obtained it as a memorial callsign following his death. The callsign is used on the club's two-meter repeater on 146.25/146.85 MHz, as well as for various club events, such as the annual Field Day exercise.

I received an NHSC Scholarship to pursue my dental training (2012-2016). After a deferment to pursue dental residency/fellowship training (2016-2019), my clinical service in dental Health Professional Shortage Areas began in 2019 and concluded in 2024. I am grateful and proud to have made a positive contribution to addressing the oral health disparities by providing frontline clinical care to communities residing in HPSA regions.As an ambassador for the NHSC, I presented health professionals, students, and pre-professional student groups with information about the scholarship and loan repayment programs offered by the National Health Service Corps. I exhibited an NHSC Booth at the 2013 Choose Virginia Conference (primary healthcare students/clinicians in attendance). I participated in an NHSC Member Chat on April 23, 2014 to provide information for applicants and those interested in NHSC programs.

A faith-based non-profit organization concerned with climate justice. ACC was formerly known as the Center for Sustainable Climate Solutions is a collaborative initiative of Eastern Mennonite University, Goshen College, and Mennonite Central Committee to lead Anabaptist efforts to respond to the challenges of climate change. The Center is administered by an Oversight Board and led by a Board of Reference, the latter of which I served as chair.

I provided clinical expertise on a part-time basis via technical assistance and strategic guidance to help move Virginia toward integrated, patient-centered, value-based care.

The grant to which I am offering consulting seeks to address barriers to quality dental care for individuals with developmental disabilities in New Jersey. The grant is entitled "Comprehensive Plan to Address Barriers to Quality Dental Care in New Jersey" with principle investigators from the Columbia University's National Center for Children in Poverty and the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine.

Creating Technical Assistance Report on structuring dental clinics for capitated reimbursement models (2016-2017: survey and focus group of clinics, synthesizing generalizable recommendations)

Joining the phenomenal expertise of oral healthcare professionals across the nation, I assist with the creation of an Enamel Fluorosis Issue Brief and author an Issue Brief on Silver Diamine Fluoride that ASTDD may utilize to resource and mobilize its members and constituents on the benefits and use of these preventive measures in the practice of dental public health.

Serving as president for the IVGCF leadership team, I facilitate meetings to plan monthly fellowship gatherings, encourage communication through social media, and lead the development of content/resources for the graduate students, faculty, and community members who engage with the organization.

Together with its members, AcademyHealth works to improve health and the performance of the health system by supporting the production and use of evidence to inform policy and practice. Acknowledging that policy and systems-level practice are both integral to public health, I partner with AcademyHealth as a student member to develop skills associated with the organization to further my development as a dental public health professional.

The 21st World Congress of the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics is to be held in San Francisco in July 2017. I was requested to review conference papers eligible for presentation in this venue.

As the UI Academy Health student chapter becomes established, I serve as membership and recruitment chair to help raise awareness about the organization and the benefits of engagement, recruiting a diverse membership.

I'm matched with an international student for weekly meetings during which we get to know one another's culture and practice conversational English.

ILEND is a year-long interdisciplinary leadership training program for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows with a commitment to providing culturally competent, family-centered, coordinated systems of healthcare and related services for individuals with special healthcare needs and their families.A major component of this program was interdisciplinary family-centered learning, understanding healthcare policy, and practicing advocacy as healthcare professionals.

As part of a state initiative to build infrastructure and collaborative capacity between public and private organizations, I contribute a perspective on navigating the healthcare delivery system within an AmeriCorps Iowa RefugeeRISE grant program to resettle several family units in Johnston County.

Serving as an Academic Assistant during the CMDA professional continuing education conference held in 2016 and 2017, I assist with the set-up, delivery, and processing of approximately 80 continuing education credit hours for physicians, dentists, and other healthcare workers who are serving internationally but need to maintain licensure in the US. Along with my logistical role and interacting with the high caliber course directors and international healthcare workers during the two-week conference, I investigated two research questions regarding the work-life balance/burnout of international healthcare workers as well as best practices in sustaining dental programs/clinics in developing countries (on which I had the opportunity to present at the 2016 American Public Health Association Annual Meeting). I was also the lead author on a report of the 40 year program published in the Christian Journal for Global Health. 2016. 3(2):27-37.

I volunteer to review various textbook and other publication proposals and samples that Thieme considers for publication (mostly relating to dentistry) from my experiences as a pre-doctoral dental student, postdoctoral fellow, resident, and clinician.

As part of the On Track Program, I prepare to serve alongside in South Asia for one month in a community oral health capacity between graduating from dental school and beginning post-graduate residency training with an organization that is engaged in holistic (or integral) ministry, impacting lives and communities across different dimensions and at multiple levels. They seek to serve in locations and roles where a real difference may be made to those in need.

Transitioning from the Diversity and Inclusion Task Force, SKIE aims to improve communication across the health professional campus and promote a healthy environment for health professionals to develop into exceptional clinicians.

As Publicity Secretary, I facilitate the organization's communication (gmail, facebook, newsletters, brochures, etc) and on-site technologic logistics (projector/computer controls). As Secretary, I keep meeting minutes and facilitate transfer of associated meeting resources for the board. I contribute to the Retreat Committee with planning, registration, and on-site event activities.

Goals for the Work of the Task Force: 1) Research the current systems in place in Virginia and in other states with regard to nursing home care and access.2) Identify the problems facing nursing home residents and access to care in VA.3) Determine the common procedures that are needed today and how the complexion of dental care for the elderly will change over the next several years.4) Synchronize goals with ADA and determine how to best partner on the national level. During my second year term as class community service chair, I have lead a committee for establishing a partnership with the Richmond City Schools Parent Teacher Associations, offering 'tEEEth talk' workshops, which educate about oral health, equip the community's children with oral hygiene supplies, and engage the community in local oral healthcare resources. We have utilized the model in other public venues such as those associated with community recreation centers, religious organizations, and neighborhood councils to reach populations having a low level of oral health literacy.The program operation has been transitioned under the VCU Student Dental Public Health Club, aaPHD, of which I am a founding member and Public Relations Chair.

The Inter Professional Education Action Team cultivates a group of student leaders that understand the relationship between oral and overall health, have interprofessional education and curriculum experience, and that are prepared to deliver comprehensive care when they enter the workforce. Action Team goals are to: produce interprofessional opportunties, provide oral health competencies (bring oral health to medical communities), advance policy, advocate for oral health inclusion in interprofessional activities, and network with other health professionals.The Legislative Committee advocates for improved oral health access and status for all Virginians, collaborating with diverse partners and lobbying for policy change.

Piloted as the Geriatric Dentistry Study Club in January 2013, the mission of the Special Care Interest Group (approved by the Student Government Council on 9/11/2013) is to provide oral health education and public outreach projects through a collaborative effort of health professional students on the MCV Campus, specialty practitioners, and community partners. A week-long dental externship supported by the David H Lawson Foundation allowed me the opportunity to work in an established dental clinic that provides oral healthcare services to individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities. Operating within a comprehensive medical home model, the clinic offers clients a full spectrum of adaptation from behavioral management/therapy to IV sedation to render services that improve and maintain oral health. Due to mandated closure of the Northern Virginia Training Center, the clinic model will be discontinued in its current infrastructure, though there are plans to replicate it in the community.

VCHI Innovation Fellows serve for a 6 month period as "engagement generators" on the Virginia Health Innovation Network, an online learning and collaboration community. Fellows provide support in content development and innovation identification. Fellows also have the opportunity to help manage Network communities in order to engage and interact (virtually) with members and enhance the utilization of the community model.

The MCC East Coast Bike Ride Committee organizes biennial week-long bike trips for ~50 individuals to raise awareness about and funds for the Mennonite Central Committee's relief and development efforts. I participated as a rider in 2013 and am actively working with a committee to plan the 2015 ride.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders is a flagship program of President Obama's Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) that empowers young people in civic and public sectors from Sub-Saharan Africa through opportunities to connect with University and professional networks across the United States. As a Peer Collaborator in a six week residence at Virginia Commonwealth University, I develop a professional relationship with a Mandela Washington Fellow in the oral healthcare field through the sharing of experiences, ideas, and networks relevant to the Fellow's interest. The opportunity is designed to forge professional bonds with an upcoming African leader to gain insights into African trends in the oral healthcare field and explore the possibility of new projects and opportunities for collaboration.

The Summer Academic Enrichment Program provides undergraduate junior and senior pre-professional health students a unique opportunity to experience health professional training for 6 weeks in their discipline of interest. As one of two resident assistants, I serve as a resource for the 100 participants, assisting with lodging concerns as well as engaging in academic/personal/career counseling.

The VCU Division for Health Sciences Diversity is piloting a five week "Introduction to Organic Chemistry" workshop for pre-professional health students in their undergraduate Acceleration Program. Students are introduced to foundational concepts in organic chemistry to enhance future success and alleviate the anxiety commonly associated with undergraduate organic chemistry. I prepare and lead these workshops with the assistance of an undergraduate student that will begin Pharmacy School at VCU in fall 2013.Series 1: April-July 2013Series 2: June-July 2014

Diversity in action towards inclusive excellence:Goal: To equip MCV campus students with strategies to identify and effectively utilize diversity as part of personal development in the health care profession and to apply these principles to the MCV campus climate.Focus: Understanding the values of diversity, especially for engaging vulnerable and underrepresented communities, developing personal leadership skills, and being empowered to impact the campus climate.Method: Skill-building workshops (5-6 over the course of the semester). Most workshops will be 45 minute lunch lectures. The will be two 60-90 minute leadership development workshops with Yewande Austin, an artist and social activist. The conclusion of the workshops will focus on Diversity and Inclusion Task Force goals for applying the Student Leadership Development Series to the MCV campus climate in practical ways.Expectations: Students will walk away from each workshop with skills for practical application, and the last meeting of the semester will be student-led. Students meeting these criteria will be awarded a certificate from the Division of Health Sciences and Diversity.

Social Awareness and Multicultural Education (SAME) is a student organization that seeks to bring together dental students from varying cultures together to learn about each others' traditions with an annual multicultural potluck as well as many culture-specific events throughout the year. As social chair, I attend all the organization's events and help the executive board plan and implement events.

I have been fortunate to serve in several indigenous community health clinics that were (or still are) sponsored by the Luke Society. Assisting a dentist in Gracias, Honduras, I participated in both clinical practice abroad as well as dental public health efforts in remote villages. Working closely with administration and the community development director in Moyobamba Peru, I learned first-hand how a public health organization functions, including both the financial/organizational and off-site community outreach aspects.

During my undergraduate career, I held a federal work-study position at the university's laboratory preschool. I had the pleasure of learning how to best interact with young children (age-appropriate activities and communication styles). The flexibility of my position allowed me to take on variable responsibilities and diligently fulfill my duties under little or no supervision.

I volunteered for over 400 hours as a Russian/Spanish interpreter, dental assistant, and general front desk volunteer. I enjoyed interacting with uninsured clients of diverse cultures as well as working with compassionate healthcare professionals.
