Luca Catarinucci is Associate Professor in Electromagnetic Fields at the Department of Innovation Engineering – University of Salento, Lecce, Italy. He holds the chair of “Microwaves” and “Electromagnetic Solutions for Hi-Tech”. He is responsible for the EM-Tech Laboratory and supervises the scientific activity of researchers as well as PhD, graduate, and undergraduate students. He published more than 190 scientific papers (76 international journals, 4 international book chapters, and more than 100 proceedings of conferences). Moreover, he holds 2 national patents related to RFID technology.Besides many activities in the classical areas of Electromagnetics, since 2005 Catarinucci has been dedicating a great effort in research about RFID systems dealing with - the reader and tag antenna design- the realization of microwave circuits for the integration of UHF RFID Systems with sensor networks- the design of automatic platforms for the over-the-air performance evaluation of RFID tags- the prototyping of fully passive RFID tags provided with computational and sensing capabilities- the study of new antennas for handheld RFID readers- the introduction of Doppler-based RFID-inspired backscattering modulationIn his EM-Tech Lab, he has recently begun a new line of research related to Additive Manufacturing 3D-Printing in Electromagnetics, engineering fully-3D-Printed RFID tags, studying printable filaments with augmented capabilities from the electromagnetic point of view, realizing antenna substrates (with free form factor) both flexible and rigid with controlled dielectric constant and losses, and characterizing the electromagnetic properties of composite filaments with increased conductivity value.He served as TPC Officer of the 2014 European Microwave Weeks, as TPC Chair of the 2015 Mediterranean Microwave Symposium, and as TPC Member of several International Conferences including EuMW, IEEE RFID-TA, IEEE SPLITECH, and EURASIP RFID.He is also Associate Editor of “IEEE Journal of Radio Frequency Identification”, “International Journal of Antennas and Propagation”, “MDPI Sensors”, and “International Journal of Distributed Sensor Networks”. Moreover, he served as Editor for IEEE Virtual Journal.Catarinucci is President-Elect of the IEEE Council of RFID after being Vice President of Technical Activity in 2022/23.Currently, he is involved in 4 National projects on emerging electromagnetic technologies in several sectors ranging from safety to education and in a European funded project as Principal Investigator about RFID-sensing in Healthcare.
