Research project on the feasibility of switching from high-voltage DC electrical transmission to a hybrid AC/DC system for increased transmission efficiency. With the increasing demand for more renewable energy sources, the use of more distributed sources from wind and solar farms has become a reality in Europe. However, expansion in the electricity grids is made unfeasible by popular pressure and unfeasible infrastructure. Therefore, an analysis of the feasibility of increasing voltage and including the alternating phase in transmission towers is necessary. Such analysis includes the electromagnetic effects of including these HVAC lines in the towers on both transmission efficiency and the surrounding environment, through numerical and multiphysics simulations in software such as Comsol.

I am the developer of an algorithm in MATLAB for simulating the deformation of Timonshenko plates. Many mathematical and physical knowledges were obtained, as in the area of variational calculus for formulating the constitutive equations of different structures: Timonshenko beams, 2D frames, trusses and thin and thick plates. Knowledge about the development of algorithms using the Finite Element Method and also the use of simulation (Ansys and Abaqus), document editing (LaTex) and programming (MATLAB and Mathematica) software were acquired during the 12 months of research, besides the learning obtained from the use of the Linux operating system.

Occasional meetings with members of the mechanics departments were held. The goals were advice and exchanges of experience for the development of future projects.

Project management and development of the drivetrain and braking system of the energy efficient prototype vehicle. Drawings, simulations (Solidworks), development of optimization algorithms (Python and MATLAB) and manufacturing feasibility analyses were elaborated throughout the whole period. Great human knowledge about team management, initiative, collective stimulation, and decision making in times of high pressure were valuable insights from this experience.

Continuous participation in meetings, projects and manufacturing activity in the team. A lot of knowledge about project development methodology, technical knowledge and teamwork was gained. The high dedication and participation in the team led me to the future position of Director.
