Process And Product Engineering Co-Pp
Process Engineering Team: Evaluated and certified the ability of more than 20 electrical connector lines to be soldered to printed circuit boards via a combination of visual inspections, cross-section production, and both optical and x-ray imaging. Possible defects included solder wicking, improper/inadequate fillet formation, solder wetting, open joints and head-in-pillow formation. Most cases required confirmation of what heating profiles, atmospheric conditions, and exposure times were required to produce satisfactory soldering results, but all cases saw an adequate certification of connector solderability. Product engineering team: Enhanced manufacturability, measurability, and ruggedness of more than 20 pin-in-body electrical connectors via product design changes. Responsibilities included determining root causes of production issues, evaluating the feasibility of vendor requests, and determining the best pathway towards resolution. Skills used in the course of these tasks included the ability to design experiments and inspections, implementing failure mode analysis of plastic bodies, statistical analysis of results, and the ability to evaluate resolution feasibility. For situations that warranted engineering changes, enhancements were accomplished via a combination of CAD model alterations, component print changes, Engineering Change Requests (ECR's), and Engineering Change Notifications (ECN's).
Tooling Engineering Co-Op
Designed manual tooling for the production of pin-in-body style electrical connectors. The main design I produced allowed for 20 manufacturing processes to be accomplished on the same platform, and required high-level interpretation of design requirements, tolerancing analysis, and design for manufacturability. Secondary requirements in this position included assembly of manufacturing tooling, revisions to high-precision and complexity tool prints, and communicating progress through weekly updates, and hosting design meetings. Software used during the design process included SolidWorks 3D CAD software, and SolidWorks drafting tools.
Tooling And Processing Engineering Co-Op
Designed production tooling for cable-style electrical connectors. During this time, I designed more than a dozen fixtures to allow for UV epoxy to be applied and cured, as well as developed control programs to allow the epoxy deposition and cure robot to produce consistent, high-quality results. These processes were new to the company, and my work resulted in a revision of the company’s usage guidelines and operational materials regarding the automated process. I also designed five fixtures that allowed printed circuit boards to be drill routed, solder screened, populated automatically, solder reflowed, and washed. The design of these board processing fixtures was new to the company and required consistent evaluation and experimentation to produce an effective design process.
Mechanical Engineering Intern
Designed plastic-wrapping assembly lines to meet customer requirements alongside a team of mechanical and electrical engineers. Accomplishments included the modeling of more than a dozen packaging lines, the facilitation of testing for multiple high-value packaging lines through a combination of rapid-turnover component design and logistical planning, and component design and drafting for improvements to packaging systems through SolidWorks Sheet Metal Tools.
