My expertise spans plant health, biosecurity, integrated pest & disease management, and food security. I have strong project management and leadership skills having successfully co-ordinated and delivered projects over $2MAUD in value on topics ranging from pests/diseases of tree fruit and soft fruit (chestnut rot, Queensland Fruit Fly, apple canker, Phytophthora diseases). This work has been funded by bodies including Hort Innovation (Aus), Plant Biosecurity Cooperative Research Centre (Aus), Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (UK), Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (UK), and the Global Challenges Research Fund (UK).My experience includes responses to biosecurity incursions in the Australia and the UK, working with relevant authorities the Animal and Plant Health Agency (UK), and Plant Health Australia. I have presented at numerous meetings globally (UK, US, Thailand, South Africa, Australia) and have currently published 25 peer-reviewed articles. I have supervised PhD, honours and undergraduate students with Harper Adams University, the University of Greenwich, University of Pretoria, and the University of Sydney.

I worked closely with the Clean Stock Nursery group in the Netherlands working on off-types in blackberry, and with Saga Robotics investigating robot mounted UV-C to manage powdery mildew of strawberry.

    My main focus was reducing the impact of Queensland fruit fly, the most devastating insect pest to Australian horticulture. Part of my research focused on the sterile insect technique (SIT), a method where gamma irradiated mass-reared sterile flies are released to compete with and reduce wild pest populations. We also tested bacterial probiotics to enhance the fitness and performance of the mass-reared larvae.
