About Luca Sardo

Molecular virologist interested in virus assembly, latency, host interactions and drug discovery. My research focuses on HIV, the causative agent of AIDS. The mechanisms of HIV replication and virus-host interactions have been studied extensively since the identification of HIV in 1983. Current antiviral therapies successfully suppress HIV replication, enabling people living with HIV to achieve normal life expectancy. However, these therapies are not curative. In fact, low levels of HIV persist in patients undergoing antiviral therapy and return to pre-therapy levels if treatment is interrupted. I firmly believe that the scientific community has never been so close to defeat HIV and it is such an exciting time to be part of the global investigation that will lead to transformational therapies.
