Dr. Lucas de Melo is a Senior Principal Engineer at Geosyntec Consultants, where he served as a Board of Directors and Advisory Council member for six years. During his years at the Board, he gained valuable experience as Geosyntec went through a change in ownership structure. Lucas was also an external member of Itasca Consultants' Board of Directors for four years. Since 2012, Lucas is a Lecturer in the Department of Civil and Systems Engineering (CaSE) at the Johns Hopkins University, being responsible for the geotechnical curriculum. He has over 20 years of experience in dams- and mining-related projects, geotechnical design and field studies, design of industrial waste disposal sites and municipal solid waste management facilities, and hazardous materials remediation. Lucas has served as Geosyntec’s project manager, project director, and lead engineer in various mine waste management and closure, and concrete and embankment dam projects. He is also active in the power utility industry in the closure design of coal combustion residual (CCR) impoundments. His experience in dams and mining includes internal erosion risk quantification, evaluation of liquefaction potential and stability, stress-strain behavior of geotechnical structures, and studies and design for dams and closure of mining waste disposal areas. Lucas notably served as a member of the expert panel tasked to identify the technical causes of the Dam I failure, at the Córrego do Feijão mine, in Brumadinho, Brazil.
