About Lucas Haley
Grounded in a strong fundamental basis in liberal arts, I work across game development, screen-based media (film and animation), and emerging technology (AR/VR/MR) to create meaningful and engaging experiences. I am passionate about storytelling, participant-centered experiences, and finding the fun and fascination in virtual and real-world embodied life.My skillset ranges from classical animation to database normalization strategies, and everything in between. I am comfortable jumping from assessing the strengths of tonal compositions in storyboards to delving into a C# codebase for refactoring. Having led small and large productions, I value thoughtful and human-centric production pipelines and processes, and firmly believe that happiness must be embedded into systems in design, and not as an afterthought.Project skills-------------• Spec and budgeting• Pitching and presentation• Scheduling and resource management• Personnel managementSoftware skills---------------• Unity• Unreal• Adobe Suite• Affinity Suite• Jira• Shotgun/ShotgridHand skills-----------• Animation• Storyboarding• FabricationProgramming Languages + Environments------------------------------------------• C#• Javascript• Ruby• Ruby on Rails• DragonRuby + RubyMotion• Firebase Suite• LuaOh, and HTML

Board Member
Voted onto the board in 2020, my work with the NZGDA was centered around representing tertiary education and emerging developers in the growing New Zealand game development industry. Meeting biweekly, the 9-person board worked collaboratively to help guide and support game and interactive development. Stakeholders included members (individual and studios), government, press/media, and the education and GLAM sectors.I was on the core team for NZGDC21, which drew over 600 developers to Wellington for three days of presentations and events. My work involved planning, data management for the events, and spearheading the NZGDC Student Day event. In 2021 I also took over the coordination and running of the annual Kiwi Game Starter competition, awarding $35,000 to a jury-selected set of emerging game developers. This work included working with the volunteer team of initial selection judges, the sponsors, mentors, and the participants.
Senior Lecturer/Programme Lead
At the end of 2015 I was invited to Wellington, New Zealand, to help establish a new degree programme for Toi Ruawhārangi College of Creative Arts, Massey University. The Creative Media Production degree was the first of its kind in Aotearoa/New Zealand, inviting students to engage in cross-discipline academic research in animation, game development, film, visual effects, and creative technologies. Recognizing the rapidly blurring nature of these disciplines, the programme allowed for students to draw from multiple technologies to realise their vision. My work as Programme Lead was multifaceted, and included shepherding the overall design of the degree, academic development across each pathway, identifying staffing and equipment needs and resourcing those needs through various funding sources, managing a growing team of academics and staff members, creating and managing a new academic culture, marketing and promotion (including travel), budgeting and scheduling on annual and semesterly bases.Over my tenure, the student body grew from under 40 students to over 300, and from five full-time employees to over 20. As a result of this success, the programme has recently started converting into a new, larger Bachelor of Screen Arts degree.Additionally, I was also the principal academic and lecturer for the Game Development pathway/major. This work included designing course material across all levels, delivering synchronous and asynchronous content, identifying and requesting hardware and software, liaising with industry and mentors, providing academic and pastoral support for students, and generally doing my best to inspire and instruct the next generation of game developers in Aotearoa/New Zealand. The College of Creative Arts is the oldest design school in New Zealand, was one of the first international universities to achieve NASAD accreditation, and consistently ranks 1st in the Asia/Pacific tertiary art schools.
