About Luc Bohunicky

My new personal playbook: work less, play more, and follow my obsessions! 🏌️‍♂️I’m an entrepreneur-generalist with a decade of experience building both products & startups. While I'm industry-agnostic, my focus has been on software startups to-date, leading initiatives ranging from sales to project management to product management to branding, marketing, strategic partnering, public relationships, capital raising, and more.I consider myself borderline-OCD in my attention-to-detail.I ALWAYS put relationships first. I’m a BIG believer that corporate brands don’t build companies; personal brands do (people work with people).I’ve found the FIRST customer 10 different times, in industries I generally knew NOTHING about -- an educational experience money can't buy...And you'll NEVER see me happier than when you catch me BUILDING SOMETHING FROM SCRATCH - whether it's a zombie-horde-base in an online computer game, a software application used by thousands of front-line paramedics, or more recently a brick-and-mortar golf simulator lounge.I like talking about building startups, building products, lessons learned as an entrepreneur-in-residence, and my own personal "aha" moments (there's been a lot of them) ✌️🏌️‍♂️

Every CEO, founder & company leader should be creating content; end of discussion. Despite the "I don't have anything to say" argument, MANY of us have perspectives, experiences, soap-boxes, & lessons-learned, that if packaged correctly, builds personal & corporate brands. Despite the "I don't want my face on the internet" argument, our face is the best way to build trust, credibility & rapport with our audience, which ultimately makes "sales" easier. And despite the "we're too busy" argument, busy companies have the most powerful things to say, filled with 'aha' moments, fresh ideas & real-world examples. Content should be educational, inspirational, entertaining, or all of the above. And we help companies build an effective online strategy that highlights in-house expertise & opinions through an efficient, off-the-cuff style approach. We may not like it, but catchy-headlines & 30 second clips rule the world. The ability to write things in a simple way that everyone understands is a superpower. And making content which someone sees at 6AM - sitting on the toilet - on their smartphone - while their spouse tries to sleep…and STOPS them from SCROLLING...is the objective....And I PERSONALLY built this playbook! Wearing the "marketing hat" in a series of startups for the past decade, working with brilliant technical people in industries I generally knew nothing about, I became an excessive note-taker (and a damn-good listener). Instead of using MY words to write websites, catchy slogans & sales scripts, I used my customers' words. Instead of using MY ideas for blog posts, infographics & micro videos, I leveraged my business partners as "the real experts." The end-result was BIA Brands. And it's been fun! Show less

My personal achievements included validating product/market-fit, securing pilot-projects, letters-of-intent with customer-champions, convertible-notes with angel-investors, & financial partnerships with leasing agents. I spent most of my time building new relationships in new markets, working between our Founder-engineers & the outside-world to identify our market-ready product, product launch goals, location, strategic allies, & brand-building. And as a bootstrapping-startup, it all started with scraping email addresses & generating lead-lists online, finding those early-adopters who were MOST likely to talk to us. I took great pleasure developing slogans, website-copy & sales materials, taking what our team believed, what advisors advised, & what prospective customers said, presenting it proudly on-paper. The best moments in time were visiting with customer-champions around Austin Texas, on farms, surrounded by animals, where the real learning took place, with insight brought back to the team. I invested my time, my money, & my passion to opening doors for our new product ROVA, & although the opportunity wasn't right for me long-term, we built a solid foundation, & I personally wish Daniel & Katrina all the success in the world. Without knowing a thing about building an “agency,” my first self-appointed task was to write a list of ~140 other agencies I felt somehow touched “software development services,” schedule coffee meetings, take notes, & kick-start strategic partnerships. This worked. I was responsible for business-building, & thus my activities ranged from typical sales pipelines tasks, to live & virtual presentations, to event & panel discussions, & anything that would get us attention. I described my role as being between our company, & the rest of the world, managing relationships entirely with clients, strategic partners, advisors, event-organizers, & the media. We did a great job at marketing our success-stories, ranging from The Winnipeg Free Press news app, to a business productivity app for engineers, to the Manitoba Paramedics life-saving app where my 1st-attempt at a public press-release saw us successfully interviewed by every major news network in Manitoba. At its peak, our agency consisted of 20 software developers, an office in Kharkiv, Ukraine, managing projects with up to $500K in annual run-rates, & chances to travel internationally such as the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The biggest thing I feel we failed to do, which I believe limited our growth, was to differentiate ourselves from the 10,000 other companies around the world who had the same resume-claims as us…to identify what we were the best at, & focus all of our business functions specifically on that.
