The project "Participatory Management for the Development of the Mem de Sá Island Community - Itaporanga D'Ájuda/Sergipe", managed by Embrapa Tabuleiros Costeiros (Aracaju-SE), was part of Embrapa's portfolio of actions in family agriculture and sustainable development. Its main focus was to empower the island community to think, decide, and act on its own development.My participation aimed at developing a geographic database for spatial analysis of social and economic characteristics on Mem de Sá Island in Japaratuba, Sergipe.

O estudo investigou a importância socioeconômica do extrativismo da aroeira (Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi), popularmente conhecida como "pimenta-rosa", na região do Baixo São Francisco, abrangendo os estados de Sergipe e Alagoas.O projeto teve como objetivos principais: • Estimar a renda gerada pelo extrativismo da aroeira para as famílias locais.• Descrever o processo extrativista predominante na região.• Analisar a percepção ambiental dos extrativistas em relação à coleta da aroeira.• Identificar os atores envolvidos na cadeia produtiva da pimenta-rosa.• Mapear as áreas de coleta e identificar zonas de conflito quanto ao uso dos recursos naturais.A pesquisa identificou que a área destinada ao extrativismo é de 2.922,48 hectares, com a produção focada principalmente na indústria alimentícia. Esta atividade tem envolvido os municípios de Santana do São Francisco, Brejo Grande, Pacatuba e Ilha das Flores, em Sergipe, além de Piaçabuçu, em Alagoas. Embora o extrativismo da aroeira contribua significativamente para a economia familiar local, também gera problemas, como conflitos pelo uso dos recursos naturais e degradação ambiental, devido à falta de adesão a práticas sustentáveis. O valor pago aos extrativistas pela pimenta-rosa foi de R$ 1,50 por quilograma, enquanto no mercado internacional o preço chega a US$ 14,00 por quilograma. Apesar dessa disparidade, a atividade representa uma importante fonte de renda alternativa para os pescadores locais, que enfrentam a diminuição das oportunidades devido ao declínio da pesca na região. O projeto contou com o apoio do PIBIC/CNPq e CAPES.
