As a part of my dissertation project during the MSc Industrial Biotechnology course, I have completed a ten-week industrial placement at Xias Bio. The focus of this placement was on the optimisation of a recombinant protein expression in E. coli. During this project, I have gained important experience in bacterial culturing for the purposes of maximising protein yield and purity, SDS-PAGE analysis and protein purification with affinity chromatography (IMAC).

I have undertaken a project investigating the interaction of Borrelia burgdorferi with primary human macrophages with the focus on the role of DLC3. During this project, I have learned new techniques, i.e., cell transfection, live cell imaging and RT-PCR.

I participated in lab research investigating protein kinases that regulate the formation and maintenance of flagella in Leishmania in order to find new drug targets and cure the disease that is caused by this parasite. My work consists mainly of plasmid cloning, which allows me to perform various methods, such as transformation, DNA digest with restriction enzymes, DNA purification, gel electrophoresis, and PCR. I have also developed valuable skills in DNA extraction using different techniques such as Miniprep, Midi and gel extraction. This experience allowed me to cooperate with others as a team and also to work independently. It provided me with a valuable insight into the scientific process performed in academia.
