Trypanogen Network Bioinformatician
TrypanoGEN is an international collaborative research network applying an integrated approach to the study of Human African Trypanosomiasis. The objective of this major research programme is to provide a deeper understanding of the genetic basis of disease susceptibility, transmission and epidemiology that will form the basis of much-needed novel therapies and interventions. My role as bioinformatician was to provide training in Burkina Faso and Uganda and across the TrypanoGEN network, in addition to analysing and collating human genome sequence data from across West and East Africa, to look for evidence of genetic inheritance of loci with a potential association to resistance to African sleeping sickness (Genome-Wide Association Study, GWAS). I had to interrupt the post due to a coup d'etat in Burkina Faso.

Molecular Biologist And Bioinformatician
The aim of my research was to identify and characterise both the factors and the genome sequences/locations involved in DNA initiation in trypanosomes, which, as diverged eukaryotes, seemed to have a smaller complement of potential replication factors, shedding light on the evolution of eukayotic DNA replication. The location of binding sites and potential origins across the genome was the subject of extensive analysis, for which custom scripts were developed. The emerging pattern suggests a link between DNA replication machinery and antigenic variation, widening the scope of the project
