In times when the health problems are manageable (which are fewer with every year when you have an incurable degenerative disease), I assist local nonprofits, mostly in a fundraising capacity. Past and present community work includes helping out with charity events and donation drives, researching potential grant sources, and soliciting monetary or in-kind donations.

I have consulted on many grant applications over my social work career, including over ten major federal grants whose applicants have included state and local governments. These experiences have taught me how to stay attentive to the fine details of an RFP, without also losing sight of the bird's-eye view. I excel in narrative composition and as a content editor, so when working on an RFP with a large team, I usually defer to my strengths. That being said, I can be a jack of all trades when needed, which comes in handy on smaller grants.

Unidad Latina en Acción is a grassroots organization which advocates for the fair and equitable treatment of people of color in the greater New Haven area. Best known for its landmark New Haven ID Card program, a pilot model which has since been adopted in San Francisco and other major cities, ULA has made significant achievements over the years without the benefit of an official "storefront" or tax-exempt status. My consulting work with ULA is focused on a growth strategy which includes fundraising through grant applications, application for 501(c)3 status, and a more robust online presence.

My work at Occupy Wall Street was mainly concerned with assisting a team of Medics and Support staff to develop improved systems for assisting those living in Zucotti Park. As a volunteer on the Support Team, I brought my administrative and counseling expertise to bear in helping the first-responders on site to develop a more comprehensive continuum of care for park residents. Many park residents were members of the NYC homeless population who frequented the site to utilize resources such as free food, clothing, medical care, and counseling services. Many of them had experienced any combination of abuse, addiction, and psychiatric disorders. The experience has been a great source of inspiration for me; I feel honored and blessed to have had this chance to witness a moment in history, while doing my small part to keep the peace.
