My research focuses on ancient performance culture, in particular the ways in which people come together in groups to sing and dance. I maintain a broader interest in the ways in which ancient Greek drama has been revived, re-formed, and reperformed in the ancient, early modern, and contemporary and global contexts.I studied at the universities of Exeter and Oxford, and was a visiting graduate student at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, Princeton University, and the University of Sydney. After teaching posts at King’s College London and Balliol College, Oxford, I was Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at King’s College London, researching the Latin translations and versions of Greek drama created and performed in sixteenth-century Europe. I joined the department of Classics and Ancient History in Durham in 2019. I acted as academic consultant for the Medea at the National Theatre, London (2014), the Oresteia at Shakespeare’s Globe (2015), and the Iliad at the British Museum and Almeida Theatre (2015). My first monograph, The Chorus of Drama in the Fourth Century BCE. Presence and Representation was published in 2020 by Oxford University Press.

Knowledge Exchange FellowTorch | The Oxford Research Centre In The Humanities Mar 2014 - Feb 2015Oxford/ LondonIn July 2014, the National Theatre will be staging a production of Euripides’ Medea. During this fellowship, Dr Lucy Jackson will work closely with the National Theatre’s Archive, Learning and Digital departments, drawing on her knowledge of ancient drama and experience researching at the NT Archive, to enrich and broaden a program of events that would take place during the run of the play. In exchange, Lucy will be able to deepen her contextual knowledge of contemporary productions of ancient drama staged both at the NT and at other UK venues, as well as witnessing at first hand the process of producing an ancient drama.Activities will include working with NT Learning on the development of extended background information packs for schools and teachers and setting up a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) course for teachers. In addition to events based at the NT, and drawing on the NT personnel and resources available at TORCH, Lucy will run lunchtime sessions, collaborative events with Oxford’s Archive of Performances of Greek and Roman Drama, as well as informal, practical workshops in Oxford during Michaelmas and Hilary terms next year. It is hoped that the proposed program of events will act as a pilot for a longer running scheme of knowledge exchange between the two institutions. -
