At Atkins, I was a member of the contaminated land and hydrogeology team. I assessed impacts on agricultural land, soil resources and contaminated land in the various stages of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). I was seconded to HS2 as Agriculture and Soils Lead for Phase 1 and Phase 2A. This role required reviewing Soil Resource Plans formed by contractors and providing technical support on agricultural land and soil related matters. The role included reviewing soil survey reports and feasibility studies completed to inform woodland translocation as part of the scheme-a growing practice of ecological compensation measures.Daily collaboration with internal specialists (including hydrologists, geologists and EIA coordinators) and liaised with external bodies such as the Environment Agency and sub-contractors and as a result, developed strong working relationships in a variety of sectors.I also wrote desk studies, ground investigation specifications and geo-environmental reports for contaminated land investigation. At Apple Environmental, I produced land contamination desk studies and carried out phase II ground investigations. The majority of ground investigations were across the south and south-east of England and were carried out on a variety of sites including former timber yards, petrol filling stations, coal yards and on farmland. The ground investigations required hand augering, profile description and soil sampling or the supervision of a drilling team and terrier rig.

At Sci-Ba, I frequently ran samples through milling machines and other preparation methods for sample analysis (pellets, fusion discs etc). I routinely executed X-Ray Fluorescence analysis (Panalytical software), Scanning Electron Microscopy and various wet testing methods and managed laboratory projects as they passed through the various stages within the laboratory. Samples included particle fallout and products from mines.Outside of the laboratory, I assisted in the development of the environmental department which included marketing environmental services (EIA and contaminated land investigation) and liaising with clients and other laboratories within the mining industry to identify market gaps in which Sci-Ba could provide a valuable service. I visited mineral processing plants to assist in calibrating on-site analytical equipment.

My time at Sillito was an internship of extremely valuable experience obtained over a period of eight weeks. I observed ground investigation and carried out geo-environmental monitoring for a number of gas works and petrol filling stations across the Western Cape and at the Victoria & Albert Waterfront in Cape Town. Fieldwork in high-risk environments meant dynamic risk assessment, which required initiative and sensible decision-making. I gained experience in supervising the application of mitigation measures outlined in Environmental Management Plans for EIA of large developments. This entailed visiting construction sites for inspection and monitoring of good practice methods with visits to the City of Cape Town Electricity Head Office (Green Star Project) whilst it was under construction.
