I am a passionate storyteller looking for a career in books. After finishing my degree in English Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Manchester I sought out other opportunities to explore my love of books. In April 2023 I took the course 'From Excalibur to Anduil: Wielding Magical Swords' with the Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education. This was an amazing opportunity to explore my love of fantasy literature in an academic setting, exploring the history of swords, their cultural significance, and how they came to be so prominent as a trope in fantasy literature. My favourite part of the weekend was the live forging demonstration, and I am looking to set up a forging day with my course-mates in the next year.During my final year of university, I worked as a sub-editor for the Mancunion, the UK's largest student newspaper. I worked on articles from across all sections of the paper, broadening my editorial experience from the base of creative critical feedback I had developed as part of my degree. I also further developed my own writing, recognised by the Alun Lewis prize for poetry that I received at the end of the year, and I know that my writing and editorial skills will be an asset in the creative industries. Moreover, I received my highest ever grades, including an 82 on an essay that combined my passion for hillwalking with my love of literature as I explored representations of risk in Harriet Martineau’s Complete Guide to the English Lake District, using Literary Mapping. It was interesting to expand my literary critical skills across disciplines and into digital space, using ArcGIS to map textual features onto the Lake District landscape. I also completed my dissertation, 'The Roles and Connotations of the Old English Dragon', to bring my love of fantasy into the traditional academic space, and I achieved a grade of 73.I am looking to launch my career in the books industries, and I am particularly interested in editorial and production. I am looking for an entry-level assistant position to start my long-term career, and I am excited to learn new skills and develop my experience.
