About Lucy Polson

My career spans over 16 years in international development and humanitarian innovation. I have a background in philanthropy, communications, relationship building and project management. I work for the University of Oxford's ZERO Institute (Zero-carbon Energy Research Oxford) and Future of Cooling Programme, supporting on administration and communications. I worked for Asylum Welcome until the end of February 2024, supporting their Homes for Ukraine Programme. I also worked for Oxfam for over 6 years, managing an innovation, research & development portfolio for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion. One of the most rewarding aspects of that role was enabling colleagues' new ideas to be trialled, and in helping to 'translate' technical findings into accessible communications for various audiences. I was also an account manager for high-level philanthropic trusts and foundations, raising on average £1.5m per annum and stewarding relationships between philanthropists and Oxfam's programme and senior management staff. Prior to Oxfam, I spent two years working in Public Relations honing my communications skills, and over seven years in various roles for the African NGO SOS Sahel - including a year as mentor to an asylum seeker in Oxford. In many organisations, I have enjoyed working with leadership teams and helping to shape strategies. In 2019 I took a career break into gardening and garden design, completing a years' traineeship via the 'Work and Retrain as a Gardener Scheme' (WRAGS) run by the Women Farmers' & Gardeners' Association (WFGA). Under this scheme, I gardened for Brannfords Garden Makers in Little Milton, South Oxfordshire - providing regular maintenance to a variety of gardens and support on projects such as the planting of new garden designs. I did this while building my own client base and concurrently studying for the RHS Level 2 Diploma in Horticulture.I am very creative with a keen eye for design and meticulous attention to detail. I learnt the craft of jewellery making in 2006 and for a decade I made and sold professionally from my studio in Oxford and via exhibitions.

I was privileged to visit Oxfam's tribal education and enterprise programmes in India (Odisha) and Bangladesh (river islands) in 2014.While in this role I identified a gap between fundraisers and the technical WASH teams in the humanitarian department, which was making fundraising for and reporting on WASH programmes challenging.
