Senior Policy Officer, Trade Negotiations
Responsible for developing policy relating to trade remedies (subsidies, anti-dumping and countervailing measures). New Zealand lead for trade remedies in free trade agreement negotiations, as well as the New Zealand representative at the World Trade Organisation Rules Committee. In addition to negotiation responsibilities, I also provided a foreign policy perspective into the development and implementation of New Zealand's domestic trade remedies legislation, working closely with colleagues at the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.
Senior Policy Advisor, Communications Policy
As a Senior Policy Advisor in the Communications Policy team of the Commerce, Consumers and Communications branch, my work focused on ensuring New Zealand has secure and resilient telecommunications infrastructure, now and in the future. More broadly, my work supported New Zealand's development as a leading digital nation by encouraging investment in communications infrastructure to facilitate resilient and widespread connectivity and enable participation. Our stakeholders operate in rapidly changing environments, making this an exciting sector to engage with, and a challenging area to regulate.
Policy Officer - Trade Negotiations
I spent over three years working in various roles in the Trade Negotiations Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. I was initially responsible for coordinating New Zealand's involvement in two free trade agreements, with most of my time spent on the 16 party Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). In addition to the project management and planning responsibilities, which were significant given the participation of 16 countries, I also had substantive policy development experience as New Zealand's lead negotiator for Financial Services. I then became the lead for technical barriers to trade, sanitary and phyto-sanitary issues, wine market access, halal issues, and government procurement. This included negotiating free trade agreements as a chapter lead for technical barriers to trade, representing New Zealand at the World Trade Organisation in Geneva and at the World Wine Trade Group, and working with New Zealand industry to improve and defend access to international markets. Both roles involved work overseas and daily engagement with counterparts in foreign governments. I also had extensive engagement with senior officials as well as business figures, media, and other public stakeholders. I was also the co-coordinator of the MFAT Rainbow Network, and worked with a cross-ministry group on a refresh of the Ministry's Diversity and Inclusion strategy.
