As Chair of the ClimateWise Managing Committee, I am delighted to support the membership in exploring shared challenges amongst peers for the benefit of a more resilient society. The transition towards a low-carbon economy is essential to tackle systemic risk, and the access to scientific insights and connections with academics and regulators that ClimateWise provides, creates a unique opportunity for the industry to collaborate on interconnected challenges.

I was a key member of the Lloyd’s Innovation team, supporting the development and implementation of innovation and research work plans in line with Lloyd’s strategy, vision and risk appetite. The team focused on developing and facilitating innovation in the market to support product development. During my time at Lloyd's I was fortunate to work across a diverse range of subject matters and projects. Key highlights and responsibilities include: - Project management from proposal to delivery of research streams and partnerships. My work here required me to adapt to different competency levels, knowledge and backgrounds, across all levels of the business, in order to drive projects to completion. I had to gather information systematically to establish facts and principles, and use this data to answer relevant research questions or problem solve. This included: cyber, city resilience, virtual reality, and synthetic biology. - Managing the working group of the Disaster Risk Facility at Lloyd’s by engaging with the market members and internal Corporation stakeholders to drive actions forwards. - Representing Lloyd’s on the ClimateWise Managing Committee and delivering the reporting process by engaging with Corporation and market partners and stakeholders. I also represented Lloyd’s on the Geneva Association Extreme Events and Climate Change group, and the London Climate Change Partnership, where I developed a network of contacts and stakeholder relationships. - I represented Lloyd’s at international conferences and London market meetings, and I was responsible for a number of high profile events, where there have been more than 200+ attendees

Research I have been involved with included:- Research and data analysis of glaciers and climate change in the Himalayas for a report by Humanitarian Futures Programme. This report has been launched and discussed in the House of Lords, and across academic, NGO, and policy making networks, to inform decision making on water resource issues resulting from global climatic change- Working with tsunami expert Dr Simon Day using ArcGIS to provide database subsets and analysis for the development of Cascadia tsunami threat assessment for Lloyds of London. Data from this project has been further used to look at how tsunami models are used to estimate tsunami occurrence and damage- GIS analysis, map production, and research for Aon Benfield’s ImpactOnDemand web-GIS platform, on estimating insurance exposure to volcanic hazards at Mt Rainier. This data is accessible to their global client base, providing quantified scientific analysis to support their decision making

The core responsibilities of this role included: updating and maintaining websites; liaising with external partners; assisting with and organising conferences, courses, internal events, and workshops; monitoring accounts; arranging payment of invoices; organising contracts and payments for consultants and external tutors; and organising procurement.- Launched and developed the new UCL Institute activities with a high visibility website, established a 1,500+ subscription e-newsletter, and created and maintained a social media presence- Organised various conferences including Dickens’s London, which had 350+ participants registered, included a special exhibition of 1st edition Dickens material related to public health that was open to the public for 4 months and digitised for online access

The core responsibilities of this role included: updating and maintaining centre websites; maintaining a 2,500+ subscription e-newsletter; designing centre materials; liaising with external partners; assisting with and organising conferences, courses, internal events, and workshops; monitoring accounts; arranging payment of invoices; organising contracts and payments for consultants and external tutors; and organising procurement.- Developed the Centre website from a static HTML site to a CMS after an assessment of the groups needs and competing institutes within our sector to provide effective communication of Centre activities, backed up with GoogleAnalytics analysis. This involved balancing the academic considerations of the Centre and industry sponsors needs, and ensuring content met user requirements- Design and implementation of the inTERRAgate project utilising Drupal as a CMS. inTERRAgate was primarily designed to raise awareness of natural hazards that may lead to future disasters, thereby improving the preparedness and responses of humanitarian agencies and other first responders- Developing global contacts across academia, re-insurance, and humanitarian and development agencies

Wide range of consultancy projects alongside full-time work, including:- Working with international hazard expert, Professor Bill McGuire, to design and build a customised CMS for HSBC to share natural hazard information and research across their internal network.- Working in conjunction with hazard and risk experts to provide GIS analysis for a hazard assessment on landslide risk in Hong Kong to Aon Benfields business portfolio, helping them assess potential risks and plan for potential events.- Research and data analysis for Professor Bill McGuire to provide reports commissioned by HSBC on natural hazard risks across the world. - GIS digitising of maps for the British Rainfall Digital Archive: Extreme rainfall observations since 1866 Funded by NERC as part of the FREE (Flood Risk from Extreme Events) research programme, a joint Hydro-GIS/Oxford University study with ECMWF and Met Office as contributors.

Extracting information from databases to design maps in ArcGIS for an Atlas of Kuwait’s marine environment, which was compiled to assess and provide evidence of environmental damage resulting from the Iraqi invasion for a United Nations Compensation Commission claim. During the project I discovered large errors in original database that would have skewed final results and scientific interpretation, extending my contract and project involvement from one month to a year, and resulted in critically reviewing the report content and layouts.
