Lucy West is an expert on coaching in educational settings. As Principal Investigator of National Science Foundation Teacher Enhancement grant: she created an extensive, differentiated menu of professional learning opportunities for teachers, coaches and administrators that moved her district from 16th to first out of the 32 NYC districts in terms of student achievement in mathematics. From her work in Community School District 2 and her affiliation with the University of Pittsburgh’s Institute for Learning, Ms. West developed a model of coaching and teacher leadership that was the inspiration for coaching models across the USA. Ms. West’s book, CONTENT-FOCUSED COACHING: TRANSFORMING MATHEMATICS LESSONS “provides a vision of the possible for American schools.” Her innovative practices and inventive interweaving of cutting edge professional learning models such as content coaching, study lessons, collaborative hub sites, and communities of practice result in profound learning for coaches, leaders and teachers. Sustainable and measurable changes in teaching practice are the consistent result of this work. Her thoughtful approaches to professional learning have earned her recognition and professional partnerships internationally. Lucy West is a popular speaker at conferences in both the USA and Canada and many of her talks and interviews can be found on YouTube. Ms. West began her career as a classroom teacher and served NYC schools in a variety of roles including, Assistant Principal, Director of Mathematics, and Deputy Superintendent of approximately 200 schools K-12. Her company, Metamorphosis: Teaching Learning Communities, Inc. is dedicated to helping districts design and enact effective professional learning initiatives at every level of the system that result in increased student learning through improved instruction. Ms. West is presently writing two books, one on coaching and a second on classroom discourse. Both should be available in 2013.
