Luigi Ceccaroni is co-founder, chairman and research lead. His main research interests combine hazards forecasting in various environments; citizen science; ontologies; recommendation systems; semantics; the semantic Web; personalization; and application of artificial intelligence to healthcare and environmental sciences. His activities include leading international initiatives on citizen science data and metadata standardization and interoperability. He was the principal investigator and coordinator of the Citclops project, an FP7 5 M€ European project about a citizens' observatory for coast and ocean monitoring. His expertise includes project and project-proposal writing, management and coordination.

Luigi was the principal investigator of the Citclops project (2012-2015) and of the Synergy-COPD project (2011-2014), an FP7 5M€ European project about modeling and simulation for systems medicine; and the scientific contact for Barcelona Digital in the Rehabilita project (2009-2012), an 18 M€ Spanish project about disruptive technologies for the rehabilitation of the future.

Served as lead of technical activities in the @LIS TechNET project, to develop an advanced technology demonstration network for education and cultural applications in Europe and Latin America (ALA2002/049-055/2209), with a total budget of 2.5M €. As a member of the Knowledge Engineering and Machine Learning group (KEMLg), completed PhD in Artificial Intelligence (first class honors), with a thesis entitled "OntoWEDSS - An Ontology-based Environmental Decision-Support System for the management of Wastewater treatment plants".

As a member of research staff at the Network Research Agents (NAR) group at Fujitsu, Luigi shared the vision to enable software, individuals and organizations to confidently collaborate on shared tasks and transactions in the context of the public Internet. At NAR, his research work was related to the development of the semantic Web and the ontology web language (OWL), and included the creation and management of semantic communication, through shared ontologies, for software agents. At Fujitsu's NAR group, he was in charge of: (1) the maintenance and upgrades of a platform of software agents, as part of the Agentcities network; and (2) contributing to the Service Level Interoperability work-package of the Agentcities.RTD European research project.The objectives of the Agentcities project were to deploy and test FIPA standards, to gain experience in developing an advanced e-commerce environment, and to develop semantic-level interoperability with the aim of reducing integration costs. Agentcities, funded by the European Commission, was part of a worldwide initiative intended to realize and advance the potential of agent-based applications by constructing an open, distributed network of platforms hosting diverse agents and services. The ultimate aim of Agentcities was to enable the dynamic, intelligent and autonomous composition of services to achieve user and business goals. Communication among these services has part of its semantic grounding in a series of utility ontologies for specific domains, such as Travel, Food, Lodging and Entertainment.In the context of Agentcities, Luigi worked in the development of an Evening Organizer (EO), which is an agent-based Web service that helps the user to plan an evening, composing services, such as cinemas, theaters, restaurants, ratings and reviews.
