About Luigi Ceccaroni
October 2024. I haven’t told anybody other than my immediate team just yet, and that is that I will be moving to Africa permanently. Let me explain. So, when I say permanently, you have to understand that the nature of my life and how I, my calendar, and my schedule work, I can’t be anywhere permanently, right? I’m going to be everywhere always. But, in 2026, I’m moving my base from London in the UK to Africa, most likely Nairobi. I currently live in London. And I’m going to live in Africa. Here’s why. My team here is tremendous. They are or will be soon great leaders. They are capable of solving problems without me. Honestly, most of them are significantly smarter than I am. They don’t need me anymore. I’m a support system for many of them. I offer my opinion, advice and vision on keeping that specialness in doing citizen science in a very scientific way and making sure that we dance on the table and are a bit of a soundboard to the sort of managing directors we have, the directors of Earthwatch. But they don’t need me in the same way that the world of citizen science in Africa, I believe, needs me. When I think about my time and where my time spent would return the most significant value for the environment and society, the answer to me is clear. Yeah, the answer is in Africa. We have offices in Boston, Delhi, Melbourne, Oxford and Tokyo. Citizen science is strong in Australia, Europe, and the US but not so strong in the Global South. Let’s change that!
