The HyMod project is focused on the development of a FCEV. The Lightweight Structures Department (LLB) of TUM was involved in investigating, testing and developing a SHM (Structural Health Monitoring) system based on Distributed Fibre Optic Sensors to monitor CFRP structures working in extreme operational conditions. This technology has been experiencing a rapid growth in the past few years due to its lightweight, robustness and wide application range. On the other hand, there are features and behaviours related to these sensors which still need to be properly understood. The host material, the adhesive and the optical fibre create a combination of factors and influences that need to be properly investigated in order to exploit this technology in the best way.The DFOS system used in this project is based on Rayleigh backscattering and it allows to have a continuous sensor all along the considered structure so that small defects, stress concentrations, cracks or other damages can be identified in a much faster and efficient way. In doing so the structure is constantly monitored and its health can be continuously assessed.
