About Luis De Sisternes, Ph.D.

Scientist at Verily Life Sciences, LLC., expert in the field of medical imaging with a remarkably strong background in signal and image processing, medical physics, algorithm development and machine learning. Published and highlighted in top tier peer-reviewed journals and recognized with several awards. Current work focuses in the development of novel imaging technology for the detection, characterization, quantification and prediction or ophthalmic conditions and diseases.Previously appointed as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the School of Medicine in Stanford University. Were I worked in image processing tools oriented for medical imaging. My PhD. thesis included several topics in the laboratory application of crystal-based phase-contrast radiology systems, particularly aimed to the detection and diagnosis of breast tumors. I have been working in the derivation of the maximum-likelihood expectation-maximization (ML-EM) and maximum-a-posteriori expectation-maximization (MAP-EM) solutions in analyzer-based radiology, as well as in studies analyzing the noise, power, and geometry limitations of such systems in laboratory environment. A major part of my research work also includes the design and simulation of computational high-resolution three-dimensional breast tumor models that follow the characteristics observed in real tumors. The introduction of such tool in the research community would accelerate the testing and detectability studies of emerging breast imaging techniques like phase-contrast radiology.Among my other research experience, I have assisted in buying parts, building, setting-up and testing of an in-line phase-contrast radiology system in the MIRC laboratory facilities, acquiring significant experience working in a X-ray laboratory. Such system formed the first phase of building a laboratory analyzer-based system.
