The Integrated Assessment Program of Northern Illinois University collaborates with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) to conduct assessments and interviews for client’s entering the IDCFS custody. The purpose of the program is to ensure appropriate clinical diagnosis in areas of a client’s developmental delays, traumas, emotional reactivity, family dynamics, and or behavior impediments. As a Clinical Screener, Mr. Lopez closely worked with IDCFS and other agencies to develop and implement interventions strategies, which support the client and family constellation. Additionally, Mr. Lopez provides consultation to caseworkers, analyzed/ prepares court reports, and participates in research to improve the Integrated Assessment initiative.

Mr. Lopez responsibilities included assessment and diagnoses of individual’s cognitive function while identifying the mental acuity of those experiencing clinical disorders, substance use addiction, or other related abnormal behavior. Mr. Lopez was responsible for facilitating a recovery-oriented environment through a psychotherapeutic approach, identifying intervention strategies and coordinating daily group sessions with the purpose of encouraging self-differentiation techniques and coping skills. As a group leader, Mr. Lopez provided education to residents on a variety of topics such as mental illness, substance abuse, sexual abuse, medication management, social skills, anger and stress management, safety, and symptom management.
