Growing up in San Francisco, I observed a compelling demand for mental health services within my community. My formative years were predominantly spent in the Mission District, where I could not ignore the prevalent challenges of substance abuse and homelessness. Throughout my high school years, I became acutely aware of the unmet need for mental health services. I listened to friends share their struggles, often in confidence, due to the familial taboo surrounding therapy and the limited availability of school counselors with a genuine connection to the students. I aspired to find a means of providing care for those in need, with a particular emphasis on addressing mental health and well-being as a central component of my future career. My mission is clear: to advance my education so that I may expand my capabilities in providing aid to those around me, this mission has profoundly influenced my personal growth. Additionally, my involvement in the national chapter of the PSI-CHI society has allowed me to promote mental health awareness, various forms of therapy, and self-care, working towards destigmatizing mental health discussions in our communities. I have also conducted research under the guidance of Dr. Elisa Velazquez, the head of the Psychology department, focusing on promoting unconscious bias training. This endeavor aims to enhance our collective understanding of implicit biases and empower individuals to confront their unconscious judgments, particularly concerning the "Big 8" social identities. This aligns harmoniously with my goal to reduce the stigma associated with mental health in our communities, fostering an inclusive environment for first-generation students and those on their personal journeys of cultural self-discovery. My future career will be dedicated to serving disadvantaged communities. I intend to offer pro bono services in conjunction with paid therapy for those with access to healthcare in California. As a licensed therapist, I also aspire to work with veterans grappling with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, a mission inspired by my father, a disabled war veteran. This endeavor is driven by my desire to support those who have witnessed the most challenging aspects of life and to aid them in their mental health recovery. With the field of psychology continually evolving, I aim to conduct research encompassing diverse demographics and social experiments to ascertain the most effective strategies among society to achieve collective goals.
