About J. Luis Rodriguez
I am an assistant professor of international security and law at George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government & a Martin J. Sherwin Fellow with the History and Public Policy Program at the Wilson Center. My research focuses on the interests and lawmaking strategies of the Global South in global security governance. I analyze and compare how developing countries—primarily from Latin America—design norms of humanitarian intervention, nuclear nonproliferation and disarmament mechanisms, and regulations on emerging technologies with security applications. I’m an affiliate of Stanford University’s Center for International Security and Cooperation, where I was a Stanton Nuclear Security Postdoctoral Fellow and a Social Sciences Postdoctoral Fellow with funding from the MacArthur Foundation. I hold a Ph.D. and an M.A. in Political Science from Johns Hopkins University and a B.A. in International Relations from El Colegio de Mexico. Before joining the Ph.D. program at Hopkins, I was a junior advisor to the Mexican Vice-Minister for Latin American Affairs. At the Ministry, I witnessed first-hand how practitioners perceive a disconnect between academia and policymakers. Thanks to this experience, I am passionate about bridging this gap.
Listed skills include International Relations, Comparative Politics, Global Governance, International Financial Institutions, and 9 others.
