Profile bio

About Luís Tarrataca

I am a Professor at CEFET-RJ and a researcher at LNCC's Quantum Computing Group group in Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro. I am interested in the possibilities brought upon by quantum computation. My research mostly focuses on questions surrounding the power of quantum computation, quantum walks, quantum graph search, quantum complexity. I am also interested in questions regarding how to map Artificial Intelligence concepts into a quantum context, from performing classical tree search, applying heuristics, graph transversal techniques and alternative search methods based on quantum space decomposition. I obtained my PhD at Instituto Superior Técnico, Portugal under the supervision of Professor Andreas Wichert in the context of these activities.

Listed skills include Quantum Computing, Quantum Information, Algorithms, Computer Science, and 25 others.

Quantum technology is maturing and quantum devices may now be built whose performance exceeds that of their classical counterparts. A quantum annealer is able to solve optimization problems by evolving a known initial state towards the ground state of a Hamiltonian encoding an optimization problem. My main research focus considers how to use the quantum adiabatic setting employed by such devices in order to develop potentially practical quantum graph search algorithms. I am specially interested in tree search algorithms, which allow for the analysis of exponential growth search spaces. Such algorithms are employed in a diverse field of applications ranging from chess algorithms to medical systems. Quantum tree search algorithms benefit from a quadratic performance improvement over their classical equivalents.

Research Assistant

Lisbon Area, Portugal

Perform scientific research trying to explore classical computational notions in a quantum context in order to better understand what is there to be gained and lost. Most of my research has focused on adapting a specific case of search, namely tree search, to quantum computation using either Grover's algorithm, Shor's algorithm and quantum random walks. I am also interested in developing a quantum computational model that is well-suited when dealing with the possibility of non-terminating computation, an operational constraint that is imposed by the quantum superposition principle. In the context of this research I am required to perform fundamental investigation tasks with typical examples including, but not restricted to: developing computational algorithms; elaborate adequate adaption strategies from a classical to a quantum context; evaluating the computational complexity, time- and space-wise of the proposed methods; evaluating specific behavioural dynamics associated with quantum computation models; evaluating potential performance bottlenecks; developing quantum space decomposition methods amongst other tasks. My responsibilities also include producing periodic deliverables in the form of publications that are evaluated in peer-reviewed and high impact factor scientific journals.

Sep 2010 - Mar 2014

Phd Candidate

Lisbon Area, Portugal

My main research focused on quantum computation, namely: computational models; hierarchical search procedures; search space decomposition and analysis; amplitude amplification methods; periodicity analysis; quantum complexity, reversible computation and unitary operators.

Sep 2008 - Sep 2013

Teaching Assistant

Performed teaching assistant tasks for practical and laboratorial Operating Systems classes - 1st Semester 2010/2011

Sep 2010 - Feb 2011

Research Assistant

Lisbon Area, Portugal

Performed research regarding the application of quantum computation to information retrieval. The time spent at DMIR was used to build and develop my theoretical knowledge regarding the fields of quantum computation and quantum information processing.

2008 - 2010 ~2 yrs

Research Assistant

Lisbon Area, Portugal

Performed research in the context of the UPCASE project concerning context inference for mobile application from multiple sensor data acquisition. The UPCASE project made use of sensors available in mobile devices as well as sensors externally connected via Bluetooth. This data was employed in order to perform feature extraction and context inference in order to learn and identify contexts automatically and dynamically at runtime.
