I have worked on two projects during this post-Baccalaureate research opportunity. Both projects have used starvation as a stressor, and both have sought to understand the effects that starvation has on recombination. The first project has been a wrap-up of my summer research, which was on Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies), and the second project has been the launch of a study on Caenorhabditis elegans (nematode).Wrapping up my summer research includes the following:- analyze data using R + conclude results (I learned R, and did this on my own)- write a paper for publication (labor for this has been done jointly with the mentor that launched this project)Launching the C. elegans experiment includes the following:- Learning the basics of C. elegans maintenance- Learning/running PCR and RAD-Seq- Real-world practice with experimental design and redesign

The McNair Scholars Program helped me understand the research process from ideation to publication. Additionally, the program funded my research in the Singh lab through the summers of 2020 and 2021, and provided me with opportunities to present my work at three unique symposiums.

Over the summer of 2020, I was funded by McNair and the SPUR NSF REU to conduct a literature review on the theory of fitness driven plasticity in the recombination rate of Drosophila. Contributions to date:- Fly scoring, maintenance, and PCR for graduate & postdoctoral lab members.- Lab aide for Dr. Singh’s SCORE course—bacterial and C. elegans maintenance.- SPUR & McNair Scholar symposium presentations (Fall 2020 & Spring 2021).

Focus on freely-moving paradigms to assess the behavior of sensory neurons in nature. A "world camera" was attached to the heads of mice, and I worked with the resulting video data, as well as gyroscope and accelerometer data to isolate what the mouses visual field was actually capturing from the "world camera's" recording.- MATLAB to Python script conversion.- Gyroscope/Accelerometer sensor fusion.

Student leader position for UO residence halls. RA's are responsible for conducting 1:1's with each of their residents, leading and promoting University Housing led events, and providing moderate peer mentorship.
