About Lukas Hackl

I am the Co-founder and CEO of Aepnus Technology, a start-up company developing an electrochemical platform technology to electrify and decarbonize the production of various different chemicals. During my PhD at UC Berkeley and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, I built and characterized electrochemical flow systems to selectively capture dissolved ions for the purpose of water desalination and resource recovery. As a long distance runner, climber and mountaineer, I love physical and mental challenges. I am comfortable at adapting to foreign social dynamics, having hitchhiked alone through Eastern Europe and Turkey and having lived in over 5 countries.

    For my PhD, I worked on an electrochemical technology to desalinate brackish groundwater for farmers in California's central valley. This research, aimed to reduce the impact of climate change induced droughts on Californian agriculture, led me to study the electrochemistry of suspension electrodes (aka flow electrodes) when used to capture salt from low salinity solutions.I was co-advised by:Prof. Ashok Gadgil (Electrochemical Water Treatment Laboratory, UC Berkeley) and Dr. Jeffrey Urban (Inorganic Nanostructures Facility, Molecular Foundry, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory)
